Great news from frosty Finland / A review of Haywalkers' debut single 'The Snake/Crazy'

image
Independent release (HWS001)

Listening to this debut single brings me back to the time when our band (The Lucky Ones) was like a bouncing ball: drifting from style to the other with no 'focus' or 'talent'. I'm not saying this release is made by 'bouncing' or not 'talented' musicians, but clearly the focus is still somewhat missing - not only in bad way. Clearly the band shows it manages two different styles (instrumentals, blues...) rather fine, but especially 'The Snake' hits the spot and this is why I'm writing this review.

The Snake: Not-too-polished sound on the track gets you the sense of a venomous snake lurking in some corner. Catchy theme doesn't leave you alone even if you only listen to it once. Nice middle part mellows the mood and lets you relax - only to realize that the SNAKE's not gone. After an intensive drum bit and harmonised guitars the snake gives you the one last try for an escape.

Crazy, on the other hand, is a nice track with no surprises but with very nice guitar solo/sound. The singer is definitely in the moment and really lets you know how he feels about this woman he's singing about. The drums and the bass are working thightly together and makes you tap your feet to the beat.

In a nutshell, this debut is a nice addition to the world of music and especially nice addition to the wolrd of instrumental music. I would also say that the song 'The Snake' would've definitely had a chance to become an instrumental classic if it had been recorded 40 years a go. with it's Tarantino-esque kinda vibe I wouldn't be surprised if 'The Snake' appeared on some movie someday.

So, sit back and enjoy the young spirit of Haywalkers.

Stars: ***( * ) (there is always an extra star for a female drummer!)

The Snake I like. Not crazy about Crazy.
