New Topic

We would like to share Davy Peckett's review of The Mariners "Demon Surf" which appears in Issue 109 of "New" Gandy Dancer Magazine.

*NGD 6067 THE MARINERS "Demon
*Surf" Tone Buoy Records USA

Log Jam At Pleasure Point; Undertow:
Objection Tango; Demon Surf; The
Last Mariner: Trail Of Tears; Vacation
On The Titanic; Dance Of The Cobra;
Shennie Beach; Walk, Don't Run '64;
El Camino A Baja: Collision Course;
Geronimo ...They're back after ten years!
Yes, in maybe the world's longest gap for
a follow-up album. here is the fantastic
guitar band who gave us "Wrong Planet"
in 2002 - "Lamento A Turbo" and "High
Plains Surfer" from that album being
two of our fave ever instrumentals.
The new set is mother belter! It's a
mix as before of great originals by
guitarists Jack Booth and Ron Ryan and
interesting arrangements of hits like The
Shadows' "Geronimo" and The Ventures'
"WDR'64". Rick Lewis is drummer here
replacing Martha Ryan who couldn't join
the album owing to shoulder surgery and
we wish her a speedy recovery for the
third album - though not in another ten
years please! Rick does a fine job as does
bassist Woody J. "Log Jam At Pleasure
Point" and "Undertow" kick off the set
and are two powerful 12 bar twangers
which carry the sound of the original
album but with the slightest edge on
top. "Objection" is a surf treatment
given to a hit by Shakira! But it does
work. "Demon Surf is classic sixties
surf guitars from the pen of Mr Booth
followed by a lovely, more dramatic
Ron Ryan number "The Last Mariner".
The red Indian feel of "Trail Of Tears" is
deliberately dedicated to the treatment of
some tribes in American history and this
is followed by a clever revisit to "Titanic"
- surf style. "Dance Of The Cobra" is an
infectious - dare we say mesmerising
- tune originally a 1998 album track
from the rockabilly band Cigar Store
Indians from Atlanta. RR's "Shennie
Beach" is one of those delightful jazzy
rockers which get the toes tapping
within seconds. Spanish surf next with
"El Camino A Baja" with neat touches
of acoustic lead before a twanging
"Collision Course" that could have been a
good track for The Chantays. The album
finishes with a fine, fresh treatment of
Hank Marvin's "Geronimo". Looks to
be an album already that will be on the
player for a while. Just loved all cuts
with an especial lean to "Last Mariner"
and "Trail Of Tears". For crying out
loud boys (and girl) don't leave the next
one for another ten years. By that tine,
I won't remember who you are - worse
still by then, I won't remember who I
am. **** (Davy)

I got a copy of Demon Surf a handful of weeks ago from Woody J. I really have enjoyed it. A highlight for me is the cover of the Go-Go's Vacation track.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

WoodyJ did the arrangement for that tune and we're stoked that you enjoyed it. Thanks!!
