Oooops...I forgot to metion the vintage thing.

So, thus far the breakdown is as such, otherwise you are not and can not play surf music...

  1. Vintage Tube Amp of Fender variety...nothing beyond 1965...

  2. Vintage Tube Reverb Unit of Fender variety...1963 only...

  3. Vintage Single Coil Pickup Guitar of Fender variety...Mosrites don't count because The Ventures were not a surf band...

  4. Absolutely no tremolo effect unless it is a built into amp tube effect...no pedal will do...

  5. Delay cannot be used. Yes, The Shadows used it, but they were not a surf band...

  6. You cannot write new music, as surf ceased to exist past the mid 60's. The only purpose of attempting this genre, if you so happen to meet the requirements, is to create as close to 100% accurate recreations of the original songs.

  7. You cannot play surf unless you live on a coast and/or surf. No, many of the land-locked bands we all remember were not surf. They were mearly instrumental bands, as they lacked the important requirement.

No Fender amps after 1964, if it was made in '65 chances are it is CBS.

And any pre-CBS reverb unit should do!

No Teles, Mustangs, Musicmasters, Starcasters. Jags, Jazzmasters, or Strats only.

No combo amps!

And you can write new music as long as it sounds just like an Astronauts song. (I don't know anybody who counts the Astronauts amongst their favorite bands, but everyone seems to want to get that sound).

Jake, I agree with the pre 65 issue.

The Astronauts is a touchy issue, as they don't hold the very important requirement of actually being a surf band. Remember? A band from Colorado cannot be considered a surf band.

And I also don't agree that you can actually write new music. Any new music cannot be considered surf music. I am sorry.

My bad! Forgot they weren't a surf band.

I just feel that we all owe it to everyone on here, mostly the new members, to shatter their desire to play the genre in any way we can, as any attempts will be futile.

I wish my parents taught me this lesson growing up, but they didn't love me enough.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Mine either, Jake. I spent entirely too many years believing that it was all about just playing and writing music. Little did I know that you either had to have wealthy parents or have a really good career that allowed for lots of disposable income. As for me, I have a good career, but I have children, thus no disposable income.

I guess this explains why there are no touring surf bands. There is no way they could actually afford the required equipment on what musicians make.

On a high note, though, since you can't write original music, the notion of being a touring band is not out of the question, as we all know that cover bands make much better money than original bands do anyway.

This cat could be in a surf band.

This cat could not.

Don't forget about Hawaiian shirts. Those are also a must!

Noel, only if said cat could manage to obtain the thousands of dollars of equipment required. That would require residuals from a lot of Fancy Feast commercials.

The other cat would only be in an instrumental band. Poor thing. Give up now.

Josheboy, I personally believe that Hawaiian shirts are not required. Even more, I believe the matching polo style shirt, tucked into entirely too short kakhi shorts give much more surf cred.

I think this thread calls for one thing and one thing only....

Insect Surfers
The Tikiyaki Orchestra
The Scimitars
Lords Of Atlantis
Fiberglass Jungle - Surf Radio

Those kids all look to pale to actually be near a coast. I give a thumbs down to the notion that any would meet all the requirements to be in a surf band. Fail!

That, and the fact that they obviously weren't even born in the 60s.

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

True, LeeVanCleef. Actually, they would have had to, at the very latest, been born in the early 50's to have been a part of playing actual surf music.

I will say that every kid in there, based upon nerdy stereotypes, has great potential to one day be able to afford the required equipment to play ACTUAL surf music. Even more, the fact that it is unlikely any of them will get a chance to breed more than assures the required disposable income in the future.

I'm not sure what caused this little outburst Noah, but if you got it from my own personal preference for a real outboard unit as the preferred source of reverb, then you are reading way too much into it.

I and a few others have been very saddened by the obsession with gear on this forum. I have considered closing the gear forum. I wish more people would be interested in surf music and artists.
