I just want more of the traditional Ventures, Chantays, Belairs sound. I'm really leaning toward the 50th anniversary Jag. It has all the bells and whistles.. I guess I really want both. I remember the Moserite days and all the hype. Just never got to play one. I must confess and love having different style guitars.

The Chantays and Bel-aires both used strats. None of the bands you mentioned above used Jags, so I'm a little confused by your choice.

let me re phaze what I meant is I want more than the traditional sound of the Ventures, Chantays and Belairs. more like The champs, the Challengers, Astrionauts i juat want a different sound than my Strat. thats all

If you have the money for the Anniversary jag, you'd be better off getting an AVRI. Those are vintage spec'd. The Anniversary Jag has "modern" upgrades that will take away from the traditional Jag sound. And seeing as how that's what you want an AVRI would be your best bet. The "improvements" Fender is making to the Jazzies and Jags is disgusting. You have to spend a lot of money for a regualr old run of the mill Jag or Jazzie. But the affordable ones are jokes.

You can put humbuckers in it, but why?

You know its funny that you brint that up. I was thinking of that as well. That is an option. My 57 Strat reissue is an amazing guitar, plays great.

I'd go for the Hallmark, but I suggest you get a good Jag.
Playing a Mosrite/Hallmark is a choice you make. You want that sound? Good, you got it. And nothing else!
With a Jag you could play anything (well, maybe not Metal). All I'm trying to say: get a Jag, you won't be disappointed and you get the most versatile guitar for your money.

The Hicadoolas

Looks like I'm headed for a Jag. What I would love to find is a Surf Green 62 AVRI to match my Strat Smile Still like the 50th anniversary too....dang it's driving me nuts...

Yeah, The Jaguar's what I'm looking for. Love that tone!

Couldn't disagree more. I just spent a couple of hours playing both AVRI and 50th anniversary jags at Dave's. The 50ths are fantastic instruments, and sound-wise they give nothing up on the AVRIs. I went with an AVRI myself because I prefer the vintage frets and radius, but in terms of quality and sound, for any kind of music i can imagine playing, I'd be perfectly happy with a 50th anniversary. Then again, I'm not slavish in my devotion to vintage specs at all costs.

This is what a Hallmark sounds like playing heavy surf/instro. I just heard all these guitars live (Strats, Jags, JMs, Hallmarks, even Galaxie 4s) played essentially back-to-back, and though they each sounded different, played well and through the same amps, there was little for me as a listener to choose between them. I liked the sounds of them all, equally. IMHO, YMMV.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Great point Noel!

I to paid attention to the sound of all the various guitars and amp combos and in the end they all sounded great and unique imho.

I'll say it again..Surf guitar is more about technique than the equipment. If you don't believe that watch one of the videos of The Monterreys; if I'm not mistaken the guitar JS was using cost about $150??

I really like the stage dynamics we get (The Meteor Men) with Stevo's Fender Jaguar and my DiPinto Galaxie IV.

METEOR IV on reverbnation

Had the pleasure of hearing Noah of Kill Baby Kill in Brooklyn on Monday night absolutely destroying eardrums with his Hallmark guitar. Sounded excellent to my ears AND he wasn't even using a Fender outboard reverb unit but a FRV-1 Pedal. Blasphemy! Smile

It's not so much the "vintage appeal" as it is the fact the low break angle of the strings are a factor in the classic Jag sound. As is the bridge. If someone wants a classic surf sound from their Jag, then increased sustain and a TOM bridge are not what they guys in the 60's used. I'm sure the 50th anniversary Jags are great guitars that are built really well. The one I played at GC was, and for that price they should be. But I see the Classic player, blacktop and all the other Jaguar variations as guitars marketed towards people who like a Jaguar soley for the looks. They want a cool body shape and a lot of chrome but want a bridge they don't have to fight with(which really isn't an issue if you know what you're doing), a thick humbucker crunch and enough sustain to play heavy music. It's not what a Jag is meant for. I don't view those guitar as Jags really, just a different version of a similar looking guitar.

You can put humbuckers in it, but why?

Just remember increased sustain and hotter pickups will give you a different sound, one that isn't the same as tradition surf music. At least traditional surf music played on a Jag anyway. I think Fender only offers Black, 3TSB and Oly white now for the Jages, but if you have the cash in a lump sum then check out ebay, there's always something there.

Yeah, Fender is still making the only color you really need for the AV 62ris. Smile

Olympic White is great lol. But a Shell Pink, Seafoam Green, Surf Green, LPB or CAR looks great as well lol. Aztec Gold and Inca Silver are gorgeous as well. Man I'm GASing for a Jag lol.

Dude... they've never made an AVRI in Atigua.

Well, since everyone's being silly, there was once a time I so coveted Aston Martin and Jaguar Le Mans race cars that I wanted everything in British Racing Green. Cars, motorcycles, shirts, library walls; I even thought a Fender Jag in BRG would be great.

Now, I wonder how a Jaguar XK-E in Surf Green would look?
