sad day...

"Maybe there aren't any surf bands; there's only surf music?" Tuck

That's too bad... 66 is too young. I liked them a lot when I was a kid. For a "made for TV" band, they were pretty good, and I even dare say underrated.

That's a shocker! RIP Davy...

Watched The Monkees as a kid. This is sad news.

A sad day indeed Sad

My favorite tune sung by Davy, "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)". Written by Neil Diamond. RIP, Davy.

I was a big Monkees fan, by the time they came along I had just started to play guitar. I still remember vividly the excitement and satisfaction of teaching myself a song for the first time, it was Last Train to Clarksville.

not a Davy sung song,

but Stepping Stone is an awesome song.

Me too. I was watching re-runs of the Monkees on Saturday night.........damn.

Saw them live in Atlanta a few years back. They were really good. Especially Mickey Dolens. Gee, does he have a voice.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Norm, I still play that song ("Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)") in my solo acoustic act, & it never fails to put a smile on people's faces...everyone loved The Monkees...so bummed about Davy...

What a shame and way too young. Another reminder that life's a lease, not a purchase. RIP Davey.

CUTBACK

ditto...to young to go

this sad news knocked me back as well!

I believe the tears I have shed today are b/c:
(1) simply, for starters, my Higher Power gave me another day,
(2) despite my prior "dark" behavior and lifestyle, I'm still here, w/ 14 years 'sobriety' to boot (Jan. 22 1998 is my 'clean' day!),
(3) an 'icon' of my 'youth' has left us

as with surf, and all other genres under the rock & roll umbrella, the music of THE MONKEES lives on. The band probably has more fans today than ever before. Some incredibly crafted pop tunes (read as "45's") were generated by the folks 'behind' this 'band'. For example, "I'm A Believer", a great Neil Diamond tune -- to me, it still jumps out of the speakers, sounding fresh and vibrant.

I just decided to seek out the video, and damn, it has 11 1/2 million hits!! Now please take this in the spirit that I'm intending, OK? The video, the way it's shot, bears an amazing resemblance to the "style" I use for my SURF-ROCK SHINDIG (and others that I shoot close-up) videos!! For real!! It sort of bears my 'unsteady' somewhat 'frantic' 'jumpy' method, even at times uses what I call 'Batman angles' (named for the way the 'Batman' TV show was shot in the 1960's, which starred ADAM WADE). This really caught me off-guard. Please read that knowing I am not taking any "credit" for anything. I have a certain 'style', and that's that.

Here's another cool Davy-sung tune-

Love that tune. Written by Jeff Berry who wrote for The Crystals, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las and many others. These songs had such great hooks!

Here's another fave sung by Davy. "A Little bit me, A Little bit you" written by Neil Diamond. I loved watching The Monkees as a kid in the 70's when they ran on syndication. I still throw them on the DVD player now and then. Fun stuff. In this clip they goof on the Beach Party movies.
