I think this was one of Marr's masterpieces...loved this song when I first heard it and it's still one of my all-time faves. Love the panning of the guitars and that bass is just delicious. Moz's lyrics are superb as well.

One of the three guitar-less Smiths songs, and one of my favorites off of my favorite album.

I do like that album, but it just made all of us hope for a reunion because of the posthumous release and as 1987 went on it became clearer and clearer that it would never happen. Marr could take something so simple and make it sound so beautiful like this...

Another powerful Smiths composition...and exercise in melancholy and jangle.

Great choice. That one really resonates with me, too. Unlovable is another of that album that has some inventive work by Marr that runs the gamut from chimey to power chords in the outro. Really builds drama.
I could keep saying "oh, that's my favorite" ...but it's pretty futile. The fact is, their catalog is full of such outstanding work. Even though it's a comp, if I could only have one Smiths album, it would be Louder Than Bombs.

Just to add, Rourke's bass on that song you posted is especially great, even by his standards.

Hey DeadRanch, did you ever see Radiohead's version of this great song? They do an awesome job, except Johnny's guitar sounds out of tune. Other than that, they do it justice.

Got to agree it's impossible to name a favorite Smith's tune, but one I consider the most "Smithy" is What Difference Does It Make.

Dig the Johnny Marr Jag and slider switch.
My Favorite song and version "What Difference Does it Make (Peel Sessions Version)" now on the remastered "The Sound of The Smiths"

I agree with diceophonic. This was my first fave song by them and still holds a high spot with me. Peel Sessions version really kicked ass over the one that came out on the debut American LP.

It's one of the reasons a have always been so enamored with Marr's playing, it's so unpretentious... never overdone. I guess the other .5 solo would be this one?

I'll throw one in - I've always thought that this was about as perfect of a pop song that has ever been written.

Totally! the live version has that special something that was captured in those sessions.
Cheers

I mentioned my jam session with Andy Rourke in another thread. Here it is. We were playing some of my Coconauts' originals and he busted out with this and since I'm not anywhere near as good as Marr, I stopped, got my camera and recorded. It was AWESOME! Enjoy...it's short, but I missed about half of it because I was just watching him play it to try to see if I could remember it later...lol That's Kurt Nederbrock of the Coconauts on drums. The band mentioned by another guy who was present is Los Esmiths, a Smiths cover band from Calexico, California. If you ever get a chance to see them, it's a treat. They'll be in Phoenix again in March.

I have always associated Marr's sound with semi-hollowbodies, although to be honest I'm not really familiar with his post-Smiths career... But seeing/hearing him play Smiths riffs on his new sig Jag made me consider my modest CIJ with a whole different eye (or rather, ear). Still, as desirable as I find the sig model, I guess I would miss the strangle switch, which is something I use a lot for my surf tone -- I guess I must be the only Jag owner to love this switch
As for my fav Smiths song, it's Meat is Murder. The simple, haunting riff and Morrissey's melancholic and uncharacteristically sober vocals give it a compelling quality. First time I heard it I must have listened to it 20 times in a row (yes, that's 2 hours )
