I love this cd !! And not only because I love traditional surf music, and not only because these guys are are all top quality musicians, each having their own style that complements the others, and not only that it's mostly cool originals, and not only that my brother Ron plays wicked lead and rhythm guitars all OVER it, this collection of great "Surf Music" is definately worth having and.......I CAN'T WAIT TO GET back to Kauai !!

Hey thanks Rick!!!! We were beginning to believe that nobody liked it. I was hoping to get a review from somebody here at SG101 and that may still happen.
It would be nice if we could at least sell the ones that Double Crown and Deep Eddy took on consignment....but it won't be the end of the world if they don't sell...just disapointing.

Mahalo to everyone that has bought a CD or t'shirt from us...it means a lot!

Below is what I posted on Facebook on Saturday, October 22:

"How I wish I could be in Kapaa, Kauai, HI tonight. The TakeOffs, Kauai's only instrumental surf band and the fabulous Duo-Tones (Paul Johnson and Gil Orr) are doing a benefit show for Kauai's Public Radio Station KKCR. It's also the release party for The TakeOffs' debut CD "Blue Avalanche" (which is a masterpiece). Surf Music shall rock the Garden Island tonight! Hog Heaven and here's my sad ass sitting in Goleta, CA. Crank up the reverb guys, I'm there in spirit!" END OF FACEBOOK QUOTE

"Blue Avalanche" kicks it on so many levels. Every one of the originals draws you in during the first few seconds and "makes" you want to listen to it. I've heard some surf stuff that meanders around for a while before it gets to the point and by then you don't care. Not here. The hook is set from the start of the track. The musicianship is excellent and these are not simple arrangements either. I don't have a clear favorite yet, but I've liked "No Can Tells" since I saw the Youtube video where you guys are sitting around in somebody's living room.

For me, the litmus test is whether I hear the stuff in my head when I'm doing something else. If I do, then I know it's burned into my soul. A couple days after I got the CD, we had a little swell. Sitting in the lineup, one of the songs kept running through my internal iPod. Wasn't that familiar with the titles yet, but when I got to my van and put the CD in, I realized it was "Colins Wave". I heard "Blue Avalanche" during my bike ride yesterday. Great stuff!

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

Classic Surf through and through.
Not a stinker in the bunch.
Some good rockers, mid tempo, and surf ballads.
I highly recommend this cd to most surf fans.

I really like the treatment on the opening song. Great Stuff! And yes I relieved Double Crown of a copy! Way to go for the Sound/Artwork/Essence! It's a great CD!

I was planning to do a DC mega-order closer to x-mas, and this one's definitely on the list. (Along with the T-Men, North of Malibu, etc... don't know if The Madeira's on this timeline, I hope so!)

Sadly, no - the best guess right now is late Feb/early March. However, something else will be coming out in about a month that will hopefully more than make up for the delay - more info very soon...

Just received this the other day and I really like it. If you like more traditional sounding surf, you will really enjoy this!

Been out of town for 6 weeks, and got home to a package from Ted at Deep Eddy which contained "Blue Avalanche". WOW!!! Shock This an incredible CD. It's everything that I look for in a contemporary traditional surf release. I commend the TakeOffs for choosing mostly originals with a few well-chosen covers. (I really don't like hearing a CD full of rehashed classics that have been done to death). The band's compositions are top notch, and catchy. Nice arrangements. Great playing by the band with lots of fire and passion. The CD is well recorded. The artwork is awesome. I highly recommend that everybody on this forum pick-up this great release. Congratulations to Ron and the band for a job well-done!

We'll be doing our Black Friday sale again, November 24-28 - a good time to place your order. Our new Brave New Surf CD is set to be released on November 29th, but you can pre-order it during the sale.

Congrats Ron,

thought this was really interesting and kinda Ironic:
"The cover of “Blue Avalanche” depicts a big wave surfer riding a wall of water. While many may think the photo is of a Hawaiian surfer, Rhoades said the image was from Hurricane Katrina taken off South Padre Island in Texas.

Yep, that's the best time to surf in the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, with waves that big, you know there's going to be some major damage.

During normal weather, I've seen only small (sometimes not enough even for boogie boards) waves at North Padre/Corpus Christi. At South Padre during normal weather, the surfers have to paddle way out to catch some decent waves.

Not only that, but the wave in the original photo was green.

Well, let me try and clarify that for you guys......
I was looking for the right photo and had been through a ton of them...I even asked the band (all surfers!) to submit photos of themselves to consider. I waited quite a while without any submissions...!!
Went back to looking and found the photo we used. I thought it was a great photo depicting the "avalanche" theme and wrote the photographer for permission to use it. He wrote back and was stoked we were interested in his picture....and gave me permission. I asked where it was taken thinking it might even be Sunset Beach on Oahu but he said it was South Padre Island during Hurricane Katrina which to me made it even more interesting. I was hoping people would see it a wonder where it was taken...maybe even guess at it, which to me makes a photo like that more intriguing.
Doug Paulin (Stormtiger) did the graphics for us and turned it blue to match the "blue avalanche" concept and although I didn't care for the treatment initially, I came to except it and now have come to love it!! So, thanks Doug....not only for the awesome graphics you did but for also having the attention to detail that "real" artists bring to the dance and making that wave blue for us.
Now then, would anyone like to buy a CD? Wink
