Permalink 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF SURF MUSIC!!!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 4 5 Next

People, we are completely and utterly blowing it. Reading the Guitarist magazine feature on surf music now, and they mention that DD's debut at Rendezvous Ballroom was on July 1st, 1961. Well, that one zipped right by us. So, I thought, let's find out the dates for Let's Go Trippin' and Mr. Moto. The most recent edition of John Blair's book says: "Let's Go Trippin' was recorded August 23, 1961." Arrrggghhh, totally blew that one, too! And just 11 days ago! Dammit!

However, all is not lost!! Let's Go Trippin' was released in September 1961 - almost exactly 50 years ago!!!

So how about it?? Shall we do some celebrating of the 50th anniversary of THEE first surf single AND the birth of surf music?

(Sadly, John doesn't have a month for the release of Mr. Moto, though the year was also 1961.)

So, here's to surf music's Golden Anniversary!! May the next half century bring even more of these beautiful sounds and mindblowing songs that we love so much! And I have no doubt it will, if the 2011 releases are any indication of the future - it's been a remarkable year for surf music, which seems all the more fitting if we remember the above.

Mazel tov, surf music!!!!

I've stickied this very important topic. Thanks Ivan for bringing it to our attention! Yes that would have totally sucked if we had missed this important anniversary.

Ferenc kindly contributed a banner celebrating this event for the home page. Would anyone (especially Ivan or John Blair) like to write up a short paragraph or two as a news story we could also put on the home page?

Here's to fifty more!

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Thanks Ivan! That's a big one to miss!
If this weekend was any indication, Surf Music is alive and well. We played a Friday afternoon gig at a hotel pool bar in San Diego. We were subs for the regular (non-Surf) band. At the end of the gig, the bar manager said he would cancel the regular bands Sunday (last show of the season) appearance if we wanted it. He said, "That Surf Music you play is perfect for the atmosphere we want around the pool". Unfortunately, I had booked a cabin in Idyllwild for my wife and me and she'd kill me if I were gone all day Sunday. They definitely want us back next season. Tips were great!
We played one of our regular outdoor gigs in Idyllwild Saturday. The owner asked if we could play again on Monday for the Holiday. We agreed, but unfortunately it rained and she had to cancel. She did add two additional dates for us between now and the end of October when the outdoor season ends. She too indicated that the Instrumental Surf Music was a nice change fromm the typical Blues and Classic Rock Bands. Throughout the day, people came up and complimented (and tipped) the Surf stuff and several made requests-which we filled.
Here's to the next 50-and let us not forget those to whom we owe so much!

John Blair has written a nice piece for us on the anniversary. It should appear on the front page shortly, but here is the permanent home for it:

I'll link the banner to this story when I have more time.

Long live surf!

Big thumbs up to John Blair for his excellent overview of the birth of Surf Music! I applaud him for accurately sharing the credit for the popularity of the music. I know there’s a schism between surf music fans that dig the Beach Boys vocal stuff and the purely instrumental stuff. Personally I dig both! But as he states, the BB played a big part in spreading the trend, especially outside California. Nearly half of the BB first album was instrumentals with two of the tunes being Dick Dale covers. Also, he mentions the importance of The Marketts, a studio group made up of “Wrecking Crew” members helmed by Joe Saraceno who would later work with the Ventures. These studio groups, like one of my personal favorites The Superstocks, played their part as well. He also states something I’ve been saying for years, the music was created by and for teenagers (not by and for surfers). I mention this only because for me it’s important to keep that teenage spirit alive in the music. John B knows his stuff. Congrats.
