I've installed a media player on the podcast pages to allow you to listen to the podcasts right from the site.

I've tested with multiple browsers (IE8, Firefox 4, Opera 11, Chrome) on the PC & Linux (Firefox 3, Chrome). I've found that the .m4a files don't show the correct duration on the player. And I could not get Chrome to play the .m4a files at all.

So it's not perfect yet, but still a cool addition I think. I'll look out for updates for it so hopefully it will work better in the future.

I'd be interested if Mac users could try it out.

Super awesome! I just got an iPad2 that I'm checking out the site on; streaming Podcast #1 in one Safari session, typing this post in another - working like a champ! Will test on my regular Mac later, but surely if it's working on the iPad, it should work on a regular Mac no sweat.

Grat addition, Brian!

That's good news, thanks Fady!

(I played with an iPad2 in the store today...pretty slick!)

Update: No issues in Mac OS X (10.6.7) w/ Safari (5.0.4), nor with Firefox (4.0) - both play exactly as you'd expect.

I do see some inconsistency in play times; as a trend, Firefox shows the times at 0:00 until you start to stream, at which point calculates duration. Other than episode 1, Safari shows some bogus duration (eg: ep3. 15:09, ep4. 17:57) and doesn't appear to try to recalculate duration once playback starts.

All in all, a small nit for an otherwise excellent enhancement, IMO.

Yes, I see similar bogus durations, but in different browsers. The javascript plugin making this happen is trying to use HTML5 when it can and falling back to flash for older browsers. I can't tell if the problem is with the plugin, the browser, or what. I'll monitor the plugin's development status and watch for updates.

I updated the player tonight.

On Windows 7:

  • Firefox: OK
  • Chrome: can still only play the MP3's, not the m4a's;
  • Opera: OK
  • IE9: plays MP3's fine but only plays m4a's in compatibility mode

On Ubuntu 10.4 it got worse so I won't even mention it. Dead
