Just discovered this band purely by accident and I'm not sure "WHY" but there is just something uberkool about this group to me. What do you think?
For one, being (practically) all girls is interesting. Cute, dressed in corny hula skirts and leis. It strangely works for me. I suppose it's because they are so totally different and doing their own thing without trying to copy someone else. THAT is the coolest and most important thing with any surf band in my book, to be original and entertaining.
Second, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY it is obvious that they are passionate about their craft. This creates a level of showmanship that entertains. (did I mention they are cute too?) From the few videos I've seen, I really don't care for the drummer. Boring and non-inspiring there.
My wife goes to Japan in Dec and I probably should tag along to film them and the Surf Coaster if possible. Have to look into this.
I know they were discussed here. I know their equipment would not be considered traditional, but no question they are playing Surf. Maybe the video doesn't tell the whole story and I am hyped? What do you think? I think American surf bands could learn a thing or two from them. Is there an American band that could be considered anything like this?
td
edit: Found a few more videos and they were pretty bad. Point being, I applaud their effort and originality. And I'm CRAZY about the way Japanese will redefine American culture in a twisted way.

The WHYs are broken up now. Ruiko recently played with the Surf Coasters in Tokyo. The Surf Coasters play once every few months, they played last week, and the next show will probably around New Year's time.

Tom,
they played at the Purple Orchid, where you filmed Laika and Meshugga,
but I believe it was 1 or 2 years before you were hip to the scene.

also, I thought that the Tiki Tiki Bamboos from Germany,
were in a similar vein to the Whys.
maybe even a bit more going for the tropical slant on things.
couldn't find a link to them on the web,
if anybody could try for that please.

Yes, saw the PO vids. This one is pretty fair.

I heard back from the lead Why and their calender shows them playing in Nov. I've asked if they could put a show together in Dec.
Neptunas are seriously lacking on the web. There are videos from '95 which are absolutely horrible. If I were them (is there still a 'them') I would have those pulled immediately, per my earlier discussion about presentation etc.
thanks,
Tom
edit: nice pic. Even cuter when you can SEE them

There is no more Neptunas,
Pam is doing other things,
the 2nd drummer isn't playing anymore.
and the Guitarist was a Lawyer, and obviously didn't have time to practice.
(or much time)
as I stated in the females of surf thread.
I saw them around 20 times,
most were awful, and 2 times it was decent.
I'm sure they would agree.
I think they were in it for the schtick factor.

Just looked at the WHYs website. Cool, looks like they have a couple things lined up. Naomi is no longer playing bass, although the new woman seems to have inherited the old wardrobe.

Tom where are you going on your trip to Japan? The WHYs are in Fukuoka, the southernmost island of Honshu, it's pretty far from Tokyo.
