Permalink Junior Brown's "Surf Medley" will win a crowd over

New Topic

I recently learned this tune. It's a combination of "Pipeline", "Walk, Don't Run", and "Secret Agent Man". Have you guys heard it? It's on the album Semi Crazy. While branded Country, Brown is a superb picker and is loved by all genres. If you're not familiar with him, do a web search. He typically has some sort of Surf or Blues Medley on every album. I sat in on a gig a friend of mine was playing, and we closed with this one. It won the crowd over bigtime and these weren't surfer types. One guy took over the mic on the "Secret Agent Man" part of the tune, then tipped us a $20.00. Big Fun!

I started doing that with my old band when the CD Semi Crazy came out, about 8 or so years ago. I started doing it with my new band about 3 years ago. They ALWAYS love it. The thing is, we've morphed it now to include several other things like Miserlou, The 007 Spy Theme, Godfather, Bumblebee and whatever else the guitar player decides to stick in there on any given night. I think we've taken that thing to about 15+ minutes on a wild night where people are going nuts. Just partials of about 10 different tunes. They always come up and say "Hey, did you guys play ___ in there somewhere!? That was cool!"

They seem to like those old classics when they're all smushed together like that, for some reason.

Aloha,
Kanekila

That's great, I was surprised more people didn't chime in here. I know these tunes have been played to death, and a medley of them is probably old news, but Junior Brown must be heard on this one. His guitar playing is stunning. I lover the ferocious (sp?) country flavor he adds at time too. The way the tune was recorded is superb. Fantastic reverb. Great tone. It's just a well executed tune. I'll never forget the first time I heard it, I'll bet I played it 100 times in my car. It took me a week to learn. I whipped it out at a company party as well, it simply rules. What other bands have put together similar tunes? I'd like to learn another with different songs. Perhaps I'll create my own. My Surf tune list is growing!

Junior Brown Rules! We've been throwing Sugarfoot Rag into our set! I'll never forget the first time I head his version of that tune! I was in the truck with my dad one Saturday afternoon when I was 11 or 12, on the way to the dump. Been a Junior Brown fan ever since! Getting all nostalgic now!

When we opened for him a few years ago, he did a few different things during that medley including throwing-in Apache.

fun times.

I've gigged with Jr. many times and have about 100000000000 Jr. stories.
We'll just say he's a bit of a character.

Heck of a talent that guy.

You can't leave us hangin' with that...let's hear 'em. Very Happy

Don

Now see, I shouldn't have even brought it up.

Most are unfortunately not real flattering.
Jr. has a ,shall we say, "volatile" personality.

I'll tell ya'll about the time I tripped over his silver face twin back in 89 when we were on the same bill at Antones in Austin. Embarassed
Tomorrow, running outta time today.

Nice!

Ok here’s the story,

High Noon is opening for Rosie Flores at Antones.
Jr is playing straight steal for Rosie that night.
The old Antones on Guadalupe (that's pronounced Guad-a-loop here in central Texas) had a stage was a very dark place with the stage lights out. Rosie’s band is setting up while we're tarring our equipment down.

Jr sets up his amp on chair on the stage door side of the stage and runs his power cord off his big 70s Boss reverb unit sitting on top of his amp though the back plate of his twin reverb (guess the twin just didn't have enough verb) and straight out to the wall. I mean its set up like a trip wire about a foot off the floor and you can't even see your feet with the lights out on stage.

I'm caring guitars off the stage and of course trip on it and over comes the chair.
I spin around and catch the Twin before it hits the floor.
The back plate comes off on one side and the right upper comer of the cab comes apart.
Jr. flips! Shocked

He’s ranting and raving and in my face before I even get a chance to say I'm sorry. Then he takes off outside.
I set the amp back up and plug a guitar into it to see if it still works, works fine.
Go outside find Jr. tell him I'm really sorry it was a total accident and I'll take the amp with me and repair it, that it still functions fine so he can get through the gig.
He doesn't like that.
Starts to yell that I'm going to have to go buy him a new twin "just like that one" blah blah blah.....

I'm still trying to settle him down, I apologize again and tell him I'll take his amp and have it fixed for him before his next gig, that it was an accident I know he's upset..... blah blah blah.....

Finally I figure, ok he needs to cool down alittle more. So I leave him there and go back inside.

Couple minutes go by and here he comes, gets right in my face yelling about me buying him a new amp.
So now I'm kinda tired of this.
I tell him, Jr. I'm not buying you a new twin, (mind you I’m "pro" musician at this point making maybe $200 a week.) There's nothing wrong with your amp except a striped screw and a glued corner which I will fix first thing tomorrow at my time and expense.

Well he's just at that point where he's all puffed up and nothing will satisfy him. So he points his finger in my face and says and I quote:
"Boy you'd better not f%$# with me or I'll f&%$ your world."

All right Rolling Eyes I've had it now.
I grab his finger get right in his face and tell him, Jr, you'd better settle down right now, cause you're not f-in anybody’s world.

I was weird; it was like a switch went off. His eyes get real big, he deflates like a balloon and starts apologizing, saying he’s had a bad day, he doesn't like this gig, he didn't mean it...blah blah blah............

So, I take his amp home and take a close look at the damage.
We'll the screw on the backing plate has been striped and re-tapped at an angle into the back of the amp who knows how many times.
The Corner that gave way had been separated before and repaired very badly; there was glue all over the tolex around it.

So I get out the carpenters glue, clamps, etc...and fix it all right.

The metal corners on the old twin were all rusty and twisted too.
My room mate at the time just happened to have a stack of Fender corner protectors so I went ahead and replace them all.
One of the cassis straps was missing a screw, so I replaced it.
I cleaned up the tolex and got all the old glue off of it and just cleaned the amp up.
I called Jr told him it was ready so he came by and picked it up on the way to his next gig.

Well he sees it, and he's goes WOW, it looks brand new!
So he acts like he never freaked out on me and as he's leaving he's going man, we need to get together and jam, we should book some shows together......blah blah blah... Confused

I'm like ya that'd be great, thinking to my self there is no way I want to spend any extended period of time with Jr.

Like I said he's a hell of talent and maybe it takes some craziness’ to play like that?

There go as promised, Jr story #1. The first and last installment of the Jr series cause the rest of em',
You guys wouldn't even believe. Wink

The Thunderchiefs

yikes.
i still need to see that guy.
I heard he might be or was tourign with Rev. Hoton Heat.
now that would be a show....

A friend of mine's band opened for Jr. several years ago. He wouldn't tell me exactly what happened, but he doesn't plan on being in the same room as Jr. Brown again.

A couple of years later I saw Jr. play in Bandera. I'm not sure what the problem was, but he chewed his rhythm guitarist "up one side and down the other" right there on stage.

He is a Hell of a guitar player though.

The exact same thing happened here in St. Pete, Florida a few years ago.

Jannus Landing is an outdoor venue, so people can smoke cigarettes. They often smoke other things, too. When Junior came out, he caught a whiff of some of that "left-handed cigarette" smoke, and said he wasn't playing unless it was out. He was dead serious. He said he could smell it, and if he was smellin' it, he wasn't playing. He left the stage, came out a few minutes later, and started playing. Then he smelled it again, stopped the song, and said the same thing, only much louder. He was leaving if the offender didn't kill it. Finally, it stopped and the show got on the way.

He sounded great, but for pretty much the duration of the show, he glared at the rhythm guitar player, went over to his amp several times and turned knobs, would yell back at him something I couldn't make out several times. I felt bad for the guy, because as far as I could tell, he wasn't doing anything bad. It wasn't his wife Tanya, but I don't know who it was. Not sure what kind of bug was up Junior's butt, but he was an A-hole to that poor guy the whole night. Never was to the drummer or bass player, though.

Afterward, he was out talking to people by his tour bus, and he seemed calmer. He was explaining to a guy about how he's had so many friends go down the drug path, and who had either wasted their lives or died, that he just doesn't even want to smell the stuff. I dunno... it must hit a raw nerve with him, obviously.

Still, his rep for being short tempered seems to be pretty universal from what I read/hear from other folks. Have no idea why he's so surly.

Didn't matter when it was Tanya, he did it to her all the time too.
And lots of other nice things like try to run her over with his 53 chevy pick up, thank god the pice of shit was soo slow.
Thats why she's gone

You'd be angry as well if you name was Junior Brown.

How about Junior Brown Jr?

Sorry to hear all that, he sounds like his own worst enemy. Sounds like a person wrestling some demons.
