Permalink Surfer's Mood Vol. 4: Latinia Luna

New Topic

I got this LP directly from Domenic Priore recently (see the the thread on ordering it from him) and I really love it. If you have any of the first three volumes, you know that this is really obscure '60s surf music on the mellow and more melodic side. Vol. 4 is definitely continuing with the theme.

There's some slightly Latin-influenced surf and some space-surf. There are only two tracks that are already widely available ("The Casanova" by the Surfmen on the "Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals" CD on Ace Records and the gorgeous "Twilight City" by the Vulcanes on the "Toes on the Nose" comp, also on Ace). The remaining 15 tracks are about as obscure as it gets!

A few highlights for me:

Bruno & the Gladiators' "Warm is the Sun" - definitely "Telstar" influenced but with a surf sound, guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

The Strangers' "In The Beginning"- this must be a European band, as they have a heavy Shadows influence - in fact, they sound just like the Rapiers, but this band is definitely from the '60s. A beautiful track, though.

The July 4's "Mr. Miff"- this is the song that the Phantom Four covered on their album. Mellow and melancholy.

Lenny & the Thunderones' "Moon of Mankoora"- some very nice exotica

The Titans' "Surfer's Lullaby" - early-Ventures influenced, very pretty

The space-surf tracks on side B are really cool, too, especially the Decades' "Strange Worlds," which is a nice bit of dark space/surf and the Exceptionals' "Sea of Tranquility", which is quite cheery and optimistic.

One bummer is that the pressing plant left off what was supposed to be the final track on the album, Jerry & the Catalinas' "Away from it All", which was intended to bring the album back down to earth - instead, it ends up lost in space!

Anyway, highly recommended! Great job, Domenic!

My good friend Zebra also helped compile for these collections. She has all of the actual 45's from this, and the Surf Creature collections.Ivan you will be glad to know she will be attending the Indiana Surf Explosion in Aug.It's been awhile since I've heard this volume your talking about,so I think I'll have to break it out tonight for a spin!

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

Ivan,
I have this LP but most of the time I only play 1 or 2 tracks from it when I DJ, need to start listening to my LPs at home too.

Dominic told me that the missing track is,was the best song from the comp.
Hopefully some day it will surface.

Maybe he can bring a copy and we can play it at the SG101 convention.

Oh, wow, very cool! Please make sure you introduce us, Brandon. I look forward to meeting her!

Definitely worthwhile! Especially for a wonderful summer evening like we're having tonight.

Jeff, you DEFINITELY need to take a listen at home, too - just a great LP. Domenic programmed the track selection very nicely, too, it really does flow very well as an album.

Always liked that one although it feels a bit out of place on the comp, being from 1967 and definitely not surf. Check out the A side which is the same song but with vocals:

Finally picked this one up over the weekend. Spot-on review, Ivan. My favorites were definitely the four space songs that end the record, "Moon of Manakoora" and "Twilight City."

I think this series got stronger as it went, as opposed to the Surf Creature series which I think peaked with the first volume and got a little bit weaker with each successive volume.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I really like this comp. It's a bit more laid back than the others, but I still dig it.

There was an early 1960's Finnish guitar instrumental band called The Strangers that could fit the bill:

Instromania has the Surfer's Mood Strangers as the same band as the American Strangers that have quite a few tracks on the Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals comp, but I can't see how it could be the same band.

I think Norman's on a big 3 month shoot. "Men In Black III" or something equally huge.

Oh man, just gave this a few listens after getting my copy at the SG101 Convention. The sax playing on "Summertime" is inspired! I was expecting to blow it off-who needs another cover of this, right? I was pleasantly surprised. Really cool and tough.
My ultimate favorite has to be "Mr. Miff" by The July 4. 1966! Very cool and nods to the future. Did David Bowie hear this before he wrote "Space Oddity"?
