Permalink What do you know about Fender Supersonic amp?

New Topic

Hello, for the festival Fender will provide a couple of Fender Supersonic (head and cabinet) with 4x12 and 2x12 cabinets.
I will also have 2 twin '65, pretty standard and well usable.

What do you know about the Supersonic? We are all into vintage... but the amp looks good and I remember reading some good reviews somewhere...

Damian from Mister Neutron uses a SuperSonic combo (i think?).
Sounds good to me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxmIYRoWFt0

They probably wouldn't be first choice in a recording studio, but live people aren't going to be able to tell a difference besides the person playing the amp or picky bandmates.

I am really impressed how the Super Sonic sounded at the Surfer joe 2010!!!
Pretty good wet sound, more defined. Pretty much like a Showman! Unfortunately, I choose the Twin Reverb for the Stage Time...

If you are going to buy a new amp, the Super Sonic would be ways better than the Twin Reverb!

LaFleur,
Were those Super Sonics at Surfer Joe the new, improved version Fender calls the Super Sonic 60?
They claim it has an improved low end tone, "fatter" sounding than the previous model. It's almost as though Fender heard the criticism given in the links Brian provided above.

I hadn't heard about the new generation of Supersonic amps, but I just took a look. It seems like they're heading in the right direction - besides the improvement in the low-end, they changed the amp-name script to a more traditional style rather than the ugly type they used for the first gen; they also now use the traditional silver grille cloth on the black-tolex amps rather than that pepper-and-salt style.

Interestingly, I was one of the ones that wrote a not-so-glowing review of one of these amps above, but I somewhat changed my mind since then. I've gotten to know a 14-year kid locally (he's a son of our vet) and he's mad about guitars (as well as showing a lot of promise and talent). Last year I helped him buy an amp, and after trying out a bunch of stuff at Elderly, we settled on a blonde Supersonic piggyback. I must say that I was pretty impressed with that amp after trying it out at full volume. On a Bassman setting, it had a really nice clean-but-slightly-crunchy tone, and in the Vibrolux setting it definitely captured the blackface sparkle. The various distortion levels are also really good, and in a piggyback version there was plenty of bottom end. I think it was the combo that suffered that lack of low end and sounded pretty thin. Anyway, after that experience I'd definitely give the piggyback version of the first gen Supersonic a nice thumbs up. I bet you could get a better surf sound out of it then a Twin Reverb reissue, as LaFleur says above.

It was the piggyback version that piqued my interest. I wonder how it would sound paired with a 15 in. Weber Cali.

One of the best sounding fender amps made. I met the guitarist for Smashmouth at Moes alley in Santa Cruz, he told me it was his favorite amp, and I got a chance to play through it. Sounded vintage Fender. Great clean channel.

THe NEpTuNeS

I'm trying the supersonic head with the 2x12 cabinet (I also have the 4x12) with the Kahunas in these days. I can listen from in front of the amp and it sounds incredible! At any volume. The switch between the Vibrolux and Bassman preamp is really effective: Vibrolux needs a bit more volume to play nice, otherwise it requires a bit more volume; Bassman sounds great even at lower volumes. Volumes have to be low... because this is the loudest Fender Amp I have tried. On stage at the Surfer Joe the amp was no more than 4.

It happened that the Kahunas were playing and Dave Arnson joined them for a song. We did not have the other amps (apart for the Twins used by the Kahunas) amplified so we said "go like this, just push the volume and see what happens". Well, the supersonic was loud like the others and kept the stage dimension with no probs.

If you add the modern features, like the variable impedance at the back (you can select 4-8-26 ohms), the second "strange" channel with the dual gain... it makes it really a good amp to me. If you have the chance to try it you will be amazed.

I couldn't agree more. I also chose the Twin Reverb at Surfer Joe but the Super Sonic sounded way better. Actually the Twin Reverb reissues I don't like at all - too much shrill that's hard to tame. Played a '68 Twin Reverb recently and that's a whole other story. Wow.

It's a really cool amp that Super Sonic!

It was really awesome when Dave joined the stage. What a nice and wet tone!!! Btw, really one of the coolest guys i have ever met!

So how can I indentify the new Version of the Super Sonic?

On the face of the amp, the new version uses a font (letter style) that looks like a vintage amp from the early 60s. The previous model had a thin, squared letter style.

No, what we have is the old model then. Apart from the logo I do not see improvement in the specs though. Anyway I think the new model has just come out, it will take a while to be available BUT... hey, have you see the price? it is about 500 US more than the other, or am I wrong?

I played on the 2x12 Tweed Model for a while on loan. Frankly, like most tube amps, the more the tubes are pushed on this, the better it sounds. I actually ran a volume in the effects loop so that I could crank the clean volume and use this as a "master". I like overdrive and this amp does it well. Like many have said, the Bassman is beefy and the Vibrolux shimmers. The only thing I can really say besides the volume is that the stock speakers really need to be broken in. Off the shelf, they sound very tight and do, indeed, seem to be lacking in the low end. With time, as the speakers losen up, the low end comes through a bit better. While I have officially returned this amp to my friend, rather than purchasing it off of him, I found it to be spectacular and probably the most versitile model that Fender offers.

Nice review, I totally agree.
I read the new model Supersonic 60 has a bottom end increased a bit... never tried it though. I think also with different speakers (not the Celestion Vintage 30's) the amp would sound much better. I'd like to try it with a JBL speaker...

Laramie Dean was playing through a Super Sonic when he rolled through Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. Played it through 2 2x15 cabs. When I saw that many speakers, I was sure he was trying to kill us. Smile

Sounded great to me!!

I love the Supersonics! The wall of amps look sick! Got it from Dick Dale, of course! They do sound better after a few shows. I use the bassman for cleaner sound, and the overdrive sound
is great too. I used em on my new single, and clean, it still breaks up. They are pretty loud. Just ask the Finksville 5!
