Permalink Good Jazzmaster pickups ?

Quite a few years ago, I had a chance to talk to Los Straitjackets Danny Amis for a few minutes before the show, and I took the opportunity to ask him what kind of pickups he had in his (90s MIJ) Jazzmaster.
(I had recently replaced the pickups in my MIJ Jazzmaster with a set of Seymour Duncan Vintage pu's, and was curious what he had in his JM, since they did'nt sound like the mediocre pu's that they come with.)
Yep, he said he'd replaced the originals with a set of Duncan Vintage pu's.
(I don't think that the Antiquity Series had been introduced yet, because if I'd heard about them, that's what I would have installed.)
So, to the OP, if you're after the most bang for the buck, I'd have no qualms about installing a set of Duncan Vintage pu's in my guitar.
After all, if they're good enough for Daddy O Grande......

Btw, they are made with Alnico 5 magnets, so they are fairly bright.

-Cheers, Clark-

-Less Paul, more Reverb-

I have a set of those Duncan 'Vintage For Jazzmaster ' in my mexi-master and I really like them . Got'em from a forum member who went for Antiquities .
While I dont really have anther Jazzmaster to compare them to ,I really like them ;light years better than the P90 type that came in the guitar.Bright but never shrill ,rich and sonorous as they should be.

i like this guy

I recently bought some hand wound early-60's vintage spec jazzmaster pickups from Bob Kennedy - Otto and The Ottomans / Kennedy Custom Guitars, Mesa, AZ, and I have to say that they sound amazing! I don't have any soundbites because my only means of recording is my smartphone (crap sound quality), but I highly recommend giving him a shout if you're pondering new vintage sounding pickups, and you'll be hard pressed to beat his price.

I've just fitted Kinman SurfMaster pickups to my Jazzy, no clips for it but I am very, VERY impressed....expensive but worth it. Here's a YT clip that was the clincher for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fjB5ztEtlM

Keep searching for used ones - I replaced the ones in my Classic Player Jazz with pickups from an Elvis Costello - a bit of research implied they were the same ones used in the Vintage Re-issue. I bought them pretty cheaply off ebay.

I also considered these:

Hello,

I finaly bougt Antiquity I set and inserted them in my JM. With tons of reverb, that I used , they sound pretty nice & dirty.

You can check various sounds at last gig which was surprisignly well recorded.

I am pleased with them.. of course would love to swap them in seconds with Antiquity II and compare, but for that, I'd better save for another jazzmaster Smile
