Permalink It's tough for me to say but....(Instrument Cables)

...throw away every damn California Cable made by Fender you have-pieces of garbage. This is the second one to eat the dust and I take great care with my gear.

They make great guitars and amps BUT their California Instrument Cables are junk, junk, junk. The sticky vinyl outer coating always bugged because it would hangup on virtually anything next to them--but they were inexpensive so what the hell.

Just saying, in case you have a super important/critical gig to attend and it goes south. Don't blame it on the amp, guitar, effects, etc. It's possible it's your cable.

The good ones I own by ProCo have NEVER failed me-EVER.

Ok, end of rant....Back to regular programming.

My personal preference is Spectra-Flex, been using them for years, not problem one.

I can attest that good cables make a noticeable difference. Here's a link to an eBay auction - the seller has 8 of the ProCo Defender cables Dario recommended for sale:

And if you use Bing.com, buy-it-now and PayPal, you get 8% cashback through eBay.

Dario - I use Pro Co Lifelines... greatly reduces hum with my rig. And they stand behind their warranty too.

CUTBACK

DGG. I threw out a Fender cable last year and also feel a little bitter after spending 20 quid on a name brand product.
It was a nice enough quality lead with moulded plugs but my friend stood on it while leaning over to get a beer out of the fridge, just on the area behind the plug and tipped up my effects pedal.
It was only for a second but it truned the cable into a RF radio antenna there after and ended up in the bin.

wow, i am totally ordering one of them, i didnt even know these existed! ive ruined two cables in the last two months... no more of that, lifetime warranty here i come!

I'm using Planet Waves cables. Didn't have any problems (I'm using them for 6 or 7 years now). Try it...you won't be sorry

I used to think a cable was cable... til i was building a amp and i had a squeel i couldn't get rid of... damn cheap ass cable was microphonic.. I use some locally made cables now with lifetime warranties, have had no problems..

I wanna play just like him when i grow up...

Lots of people that sell stuff to the store leave cables with there stuff (we don't buy them) So I get to see lots of cables.

Im 100% with dario, Fender cables are junk!
I think Monster's are right behind them. Lot of hype but every one i see is dying or dead.

My experience with Monster cables has been very good, I think maybe one has gone bad in 10 years or so, and any store that sells them will replace them for free. Kind of pricey though. I use the Monster "jazz" type and it does sound different than their "rock" series, at least to me.

Our bass player John Hunt makes my cables...hand made...i've been using the same one now for five years!! He makes my little stomp box cables too...look around your area maybe you can find someone that can make your cables too.

I've always been intrigued by Monster's "genre specific" cables but have never actually tried them. I'd be interested to hear more about player's experiences with them.

Just a tip that might be helpful. Any cable, no matter how good it is, will fail with repeated twisting. When you coil the cable to put it away, never wrap the cable around your hand and elbow, as I've seen lots of people do, or somehow make the coil a circle. This twists the wires inside. Instead, put the two phono plug ends together so that the cable is now half size. Then, bring the curved end up to the phono plugs so that the cable is now quarter size. Repeat as needed.

This way, the wires inside the cable are not twisted. I play every day with a cable going to my reverb unit; another cable going from the reverb unit to a small pedal board; and a third cable going from the pedal board to my amp. I have a variety of cables, some of them are cheap and some are years old, but they never go bad. I'm pretty sure that's because I don't twist them.

Hope that helps!

I'm still a strong advocate for Mogami cables, a while back I replaced the main Mogami that went to my reverb unit with a white Fender coil cable and my tone wasn't as good as I knew it could be.
So I switched back to Mogami and everything just opened right back up, I'll certainly never make that mistake again.

I actually use some of those Fender tweed cables that I got for pretty cheap; so far so good, but I don't gig. I'll probably look into those ProCo cables at the first sign of any problems or alien signals.

I completely agree - fender cables are absolute rubbish. I'd rather use one of those super cheap-o cables that music stores sell for like a buck. I've never seen a cable suck volume and tone like a Fender.

I've been using ProCos for years, and have never been let down by them. For a while, I was sold on the Planet Waves cables that were all the rage, but there was one key problem: you can't pull apart the plug at all; it was all plastic. That means when anything gets a little wonky, you're left with no choice but to pitch the whole cable. With a little know-how, you can repair ProCo cables easily - I've chopped and re-soldered so many, I might as well become a tech for them.

I do play a Monster cable when I play bass, and I can't say that I necessarily hear any difference but it absolutely seems sturdy as all get out, and in the two years I've had it, it has never had so much as a hiccup through all the bi-weekly practices and probably fifty shows or more.

I just picked up a Mogami cable to run from my wireless receiver to my amp, and thus far I'm pretty impressed with it. Maybe not worth the $20 or so I paid for a short cable, but you spend the cash on speculation that you won't have to replace it, right?

There is no better cable than George L's instrument cable. I've had the same set of cables for some 6yrs and they work perfect. Not to mention they have
very low capacitance loading ( cleaner improved tone) and they are a great investment.

Planet Waves cables are guaranteed for life so you don't need to fix them. I've returned a couple already and the guy at the guitar store here just handed me back a replacement Planet Waves cable of the same type. I didn't even need the receipt.

Doesn't get much easier than that.

I remember hyping that feature too, when I sold them while working at a local music shop. Unfortunately, the store stopped carrying them!
