I don't think I'd want to see a band doing all surf covers, but The Shadows music is still obscure to the American ear so it will sound fresh and original. (Sadly) I'd say that if you didn't know it was a cover band, you'd wonder how The Men of Mystery came up with so many great songs.
I won't deny any of your valid points, Ferenc. However, I have gone on record as saying I do not support tribute bands & it would be hypocritical for me to say "Well, the Troubadors/Men of Mystery are OK because they pay tribute to an obscure band." As some of you may or may not know, I was recently asked to front a Buck Owens tribute band by a musician I have nothing but the highest respect for. I mean, I was HONORED just to be asked by this guy. But I can't do it.

I hope the 4th convention is all tribute bands. Writing your own material, creating your own act, developing your own sound is SO overrated. Especially when you can rip some other band's songs/act/sound for free & usually get paid for it. And keep some original band from getting booked somewhere.
But I digress. Really looking forward to seeing the Space Cossacks, Space Rangers & Surfside IV!
Let me guess, The Troubadours stole a gig from you in Poughkeepsie?
No, but back when I would scour the LA Weekly & the OC Weekly for venues to book my old band, I would see venues that ONLY booked tribute bands. Is it me, or am I the only one who sees a problem there?
I dont see a problem in that. In the OC Weekly and LA Weekly we see rooms that only do jazz, others only do country, others only do tribute bands, etc
The real problem is the lack of clubs that will have surf bands. The SG101 convention is lucky to get the place we have AND even then, we gotta be outta there by 8PM so they can bring on a D.J.

Googling "Jazz clubs in Los Angeles" will get ya a good list. The big issue is the lack of places that will take surf music.

When I get off the Freeway at Seal Beach Blvd. to go to your place or Dons,
there is an Italian Restaurant called "Spaghettini Rotisserie & Grill"
www.spaghettini.com
3005 Old Ranch Parkway
Seal Beach, CA 90740-2749
(562) 596-2199
I hear its amazing, you should check it out,
and they have only Jazz in there.

Wow, we are really thrilled to be playing this year's convention. It almost didn't happen and we are so happy to be on the bill. It is going to be a blast to meet everyone and see all these cool acts.
Jeff: I hearing The Space Rangers for the first time. Cool sound! How did I miss them all this time?

Trey,
Glad to have you aboard,
cool that you are diggin the Space Rangers.
If I recall correctly, I found them by accident a few years back.
and I think I posted them in a thread I started titled, Post a band you found on myspace.
Then I forgot about them.
Then Whorehay found them, and started playing them, on his RFB podcast, and played me the whole cd.
I knew it sounded familiar, but I wasn't putting 2 and 2 together.
He asked me if he could suggest a few bands for this years SG101 convention, and they were one of them that was interested, and could make it out here this year.
while writing the announcement post,
I was listening to their songs over and over.
I really need to get their cd.
Wonder if I can talk them into a promo copy for all my hard work organizing the tour for them?

Ok I will probably post this elsewhere so it doesn't get lost here.
But not sure where yet.
I will be making a sign up list.
Dave Wronski asked his boss at Fender if we could do a tour of the Fender Plant, and the Custom Shop.
On Fri. August 6th in the Morning.
the answer is YES!
limit of 25 people,
but maybe if we get more,
they can get another tour guide for the 2nd group.
Then after the Fender Plant Tour,
we can go over to the Fender Museum,
few miles away. Then Back to the Fullerton Museum.
Small display of real early Fender's Projects.
and then Drive by where the old Fender Plant was in Fullerton.
then people can split up and go to the San Diego,
or OC Pre Convention surf shows.
