Permalink Which was the first SURF music album you got?

When I was a boy, my dad had Ventures & Dick Dale and Lively Ones albums that I loved. But when I was about 9, my parents split and he took his albums with him (that jerk!!! lol jk). And of course, when I got older I got involved in music that was more modern for my age (new wave, grunge, alternative, etc...)

Then Pulp Fiction came out when I was 19, and hearing that Miserlou opening totally took me back to my childhood. so I went out and bought the soundtrack.

Not long after that, I found the Pulp Surfin compilation by Del-Fi. I guess you can say that was my first real surf album that I bought for myself.

I've been hooked since! Smile

I listened to my sister's copy of Shut Down Vol. 2 every day after high school. In the 90s I bought a cassette called Surfin Sixties and did my best to wear it out.

"We're lousy, we can't play. If you wait until you can play, you'll be too old to get up there. We stink, really. But it's great," Johnny Ramone .

This is also the first 'real' surf album that I got.
I bought this album when I was living in Perth, Western Australia.
The 'other' first surf record was a single by The Surfaris, Surfer Joe & Wipe Out.
Before that is was The Shadows.

That was my first instrumental surf album. Great selection of classics sprinkled in with lesser known gems by such groups as The Avantis, Bobby Fuller, PJ and the Galaxies.

Almost as important to me are the liner notes by Jon Blair (despite the mix up with Glen Frey). There is a wealth of info in that little booklet, and one could do worse than this comp for a solid introduction.

This was the first place I learned that Messina used to play surf, that Bobby Fuller had this other side, and most surprisingly, that several of the Crossfires would become the Turtles ("Happy Together")

This really drove home to me what an ephemeral, short lived phenomenon first wave surf music was. It seemed to develop quickly with bands disappearing just as quickly.

Speaking of the Crossfires, the tone on that lead is still definitive for me. That is the closest a non-surfer like me can get to the power of the surf, musically. It howls, and wails--just drenched in reverb and the sound of springs--still gives me chills every time.

track list:

  1. Run For Life, A - Dick Dale & His Del-Tones
  2. Surf Rider - The Lively Ones
  3. Beyond - The Chantays
  4. Latin'ia - The Sentinels
  5. Baja - The Astronauts
  6. Squad Car - Eddie & The Showmen
  7. Tidal Wave - The Challengers
  8. Tally Ho - P.J. & The Galaxies
  9. Diamond Head - The Ventures
  10. Soul Surfer - Johnny Fortune
  11. Bombora - The Original Surfaris
  12. Jester, The - Jim Messina & The Jesters
  13. Gypsy Surfer - The Avantis (bonus track)
  14. Our Favorite Martian - Bobby Fuller & The Fanatics
  15. Bustin' Surfboards - The Tornadoes
  16. Point Panic - The Sufaris
  17. Mar Gaya - The Fender IV (bonus track)
  18. Fiberglass Jungle - The Crossfires

I "got it" when I was 5 years old..."got it" out of my Dad's record collection and never ever gave it back!

Although not surf per say and not really instro the first song I remember from the earliest days of my child hood, the record I wore out at the age or four, was the Rip Chords "Hey Little Cobra" and that started it all for me.

Combine that with "Dead Mans Curve," "409" and "Shut Down" and you have the songs I knew the words to before all others as a child.

I guess that is why I prefer "drag" over "surf."

I know I will get crap for this, but I also never tire of "Pipeline" by the Chantays. The bass tone, the organ, the whole thing still gets me. I know many of you hate that song but I love it still.

"Wipe Out" by our local band The Impacts followed by "Surfing" by The Ventures.

Surf Beat '80. I bought it new in Westwood, 1980. I can still remember the punkish counter girl saying "all right!" when I brought it up to pay for it.

Very true - it may be overplayed when it comes to cover songs, but the original? Never.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Hate playing it isn't the same as hating the song. Of course the original is great, so are the few inspired covers of it.

I heard the Original on a very small FM classic rock station in Irvine the other day. I needed to get some work done before the sun went down.
but i had to sit there and listen to the whole thing.

classic rock indeed.

I found this in the new release bin at Music Plus in 1980. Dick Dale's album notes on the back cover sold me on it. The recording itself sold me on surf/instro in general.

The recent mentions of Surf Beat '80 made me think that my first surf record actually might have been the 12" 4-song Splashback EP, although it's not an album.

I just listened to one of the songs from that comp on the SG101 podcast(#7) Blast Off by Mickey & the Invaders. It's a pretty cool song, I dug it. But I have interesting fact about this band. One of the members, the keyboard player is Bobby Espinoza of El Chicano. He's the dude playing the Hammond Organ.

There's a DVD that my friend Santiago(Mr.Reverb63) gave me for my birthday about that band and in one of the interviews Bobby mentions that his first band was a Surf band called "Mickey & the Invaders" and that he played Farfisa for this band back in 1965.

After hearing that I looked everywhere online to check this band out and found nothing but then I found some info on Instromania and saw that ther's a song by them on the Surf Creature comp(which I don't have but I should). But yeah it's a pretty cool tune. I've never heard it before but I liked it. BTW I think most of the members of that band are Latinos which is pretty cool.

_Guitare, chant: Mike AVERSA
Batterie: Barry WARD
Basse: Simon CASAS
Claviers: Bobby ESPINOZA
Trompette: Mario SOSA
Guitare: Sonny LATHROP
Saxophone : John ORTIZ _

Anyways I though that I would post this little bit of interesting information for those who may be interested.
