Hey SurfandBill....when you show up for your mastering party, make sure you carry along several of the Surf CD's that you think sound really good. That way you can A/B yours and them. To a mastering engineer, one quick listen is worth it's weight in gold.....

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Excellent advice Eddie, I forgot about it.
A good mastering engineer can hear the examples and get the "feel" that you want. Doesn't work so well with a recording engineer, though.

Good luck,
Ran

P.S - my off topic comment about reference cds for the recording engineer meant - there's more chance to screw up what goes on tape if you have an engineer that was only exposed to surf music through the cds you brought him/her. Once it's already mixed and ready to master, and you find that (rare) good mastering engineer, it's more about "objective" good sounding CD than genere specifics.

The Scimitars

Thanks for the advice, everyone, and keep 'em coming! I always bring some discs along as reference points, especially since I don't know for sure how much our engineer knows about surf recording. I know he has done some before, and has run boards at show for surf bands a number of times, but he is very open to capturing "our" sound.

Wannes, I fly into Rome April 5 or 6 (I haven't figured out time changes yet), Days 2-4 I am in Rome, Day 5 I travel to Florence, and will be there until Day 8, when I will be around the French Riviera - Monaco, Eze, and Nice. Days nine through twelve I will be in Paris.

Now to make all of you hate me - I'm on this trip as a chaperone for a high school group, so everything except for lunch and souvenirs is paid for.

This trip is a major reason the Rats have been pushing so hard to get our studio time in BEFORE April...

Rome... I envy you so much. I don't know if you know but I Roman History is my emphasis. If you see the University of Washington Rome Center that is where Pompey's Theatre used to be and that is where Caesar was killed. It actually uses the same foundation as the theatre.

I'm just about finished mixing the new Urban Surf Kings CD, "Bang, Howdy Partner!", and am sending it off to a couple of places for some test mastering. With all the work involved in mixing an album, I can't imagine mastering it myself. Kudos to those of you who do it.

Sending it elsewhere will certainly give it a much needed new set of ears. Now I know why we had others record and mix our CDs...what a load of work. It certainly is a learning process!

Hopefully this one will be out by early summer.

too bad Phil Dirt doesn't participate in this forum. He has his own mastering service.

Crying

Has anyone used Phil Dirts mastering services? If so, what did you think of the finished product. We are going into the studio in June Very Happy and we still havent decided where to have the CD mastered.
