I could be wrong about the title, but one of them is a phoney and it made it on both comps. I'll check which one, but that was the one that came to mind.

Meanwhile dig out your CD and check.

dig out which cd?

as Im pretty sure that Dave Myers and the Surftones did a song called Cecilia Ann.

are you saying that the one on the comp is not that right song?
or they had a studio band play it and re record it?

I'm lost as to what you mean.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I'm saying that the producers made up a song, recorded it and put it on the comp under a made up band name. Is that clear?

Oh and the Pixies covered it.

I don't think Dave Meyers and the Surftones ever did the song.
I don't have all of their 45s, so if you do and it's on some obscure B-side, let us know.
But the song is not on Hangin' Twenty or Moment of Truth: The Best of...
The only place the song ever appeared is on "Surf Legends & Rumors" by the Surftones. It is the only known track by this "mystery band". It was a hoax, and the Pixies fell for it.
Outsides is trying to say that they were not a 60s band as insinuated by their being included on the comp. The song was recorded for the release of the comp.

Yes, it was Celia Ann by the "Surftones" actually it was Steve Hoffman the producer.

Yes, Ted said it a bit more clearly.

Huh, never knew that. I dig The Bambi Molester's version of Cecilia Ann.

Yeah, this is a surprising bit of info to emerge from this thread. Ceclia Ann is a great surf tune. If it was recorded in the 80s for that comp, I am really impressed. Sounds so period to me.

wow I had no idea about that song,
will have to look at all my stuff, and confer with Baja Marty.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I didn't know the song was a fake either. Here's a forum thread were Hoffman talks about it:

I'm really surprised Ace didn't find out and included it on their new comp.

I first heard that song when the Nebulas covered it for their live at KFJC disc. ("Eric Grammar on the bass....Bristol Express....")

Bristol Express was a cover of the song by the Hollies Brian.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

"Bristol Express" was an Eagles cover (Brit Eagles, not crime against humanity Eagles). "Bus Stop" is the Hollies cover.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

my bad, sorry,
got my B words mixed up.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Yeah I know. I typed too fast. Here is what I should have said:

BN if I had a time machine
I first became aware of Cecilia Ann from the Nebulas KFJC disc.

Oh, BTW, a funny thing on that KJFC disc. At the beginning of the totally unrelated song Bristol Express, Dano says a line that cracks me up everytime. He whispers: "Eric Grammar on the bass....Bristol Expressssssssss...."

Sorry for confusing the issue.

Wow, there it is. You found the smoking gun!

not crime against humanity Eagles.

I can see that as the title of their next comeback---"The Eagles Crimes Against Humanity Tour '09".

Speaking of which . . . .

since we seem to be exploding some myths and false information on this thread, is it really _the _Glenn Frey from the Eagles who co wrote the Jester album with Jim Messina as is written in the liner notes of the Guitar Player/Rhino Surf comp? I didn't find it on the web, but coincidentally, found out that (according to Wiki) Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmidt was in a surf band called the "Contenders":

No, we've discussed that before. It is a different Frey. He was tacked onto the credits so he could get songwriting royalties and screw the band.

Found it, thanks Brian. Interesting read too.

That's so funny about "Cecilia Ann" ... for a fake, it's really, really well done. I guess The Finks - among others - got fooled, too.

As do I - I heard theirs before I got into surf music and always dug it. In fact, the main reason I bought "Surf Legends and Rumors" was because I wanted to hear the original.
