Permalink UNSTEADY FREDDIE'S SURF-ROCK SHINDIGS AT OTTO'S (NYC)

New Topic

Thanks to Unsteady Freddie for another great night of music at Otto's. every month the Surf-Rock Shindig continues to draw crowds. It's the happening spot for the East Coast surf music scene. Alas, it's not the only event or venue featuring surf ...

so, I invite anyone in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and beyond ... c'mon out and support surf related events ... be it Bobby D's Surf Nite!, Blue Stingraye's nights at The Zen Bar, Surf Night at Jerky's in Providence, The Coppertones in NJ, and countless other events listed at www.nesmasurf.org and elsewhere ...

yes, the surf scene on the West Coast is a good one. Let's show 'em we got a good one on the East Coast, too.

Great show last night! The new drummer for the Octomen was a teen sensation and Rattlesnake Ralph shredded like he has never done before.

I was very glad to have caught Mister Neutron (did you know they love you?) who graciously played Neutron Stomp for me.

My first time hearing Bongo Surf. What fine band this is! I hope play another surf shindig this year.

And the night began with best looking band on the east coast, The Clams & lovely Clamdiggers. How is it these women get better looking as time goes by? It must be the music.

Julie Rozar (WiB) and I appear to have closed out the night, which ended...oh, at 3 am.

If you missed it, have no worries, there's another killer line up for April, at least that's the rumor flying around.

Aloha,
Blue StingRaye

LINE-UP CHANGE FOR MAY 3RD SURF-ROCK SHIDNIG, PLEASE NOTE:

and thanx for calling me a 'guy in his 40s' !!

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

Thanks Unsteady ... the promo piece on Metromix wouldn't be worth a thing without mentioning the Unsteady one ...

Amazingly, the lineups for future Surf Nite! events are filling out. Surf, garage, rockabilly, psychobilly, and even power pop ... it's all good!

Along the way, I'm trying to get surf bands on every bill, but Thursday nights are proving tough for many of the NESMA bands, so the bands who do play are interested in playing surf tunes during their sets. Maybe not a full fledged surf band, but it keeps the genre at the forefront.

and when there's no surf on the stage, surf sounds will be beaming from the sound system before and after the bands.

Oh, the Corner Pocket Cafe has a brand new speaker system ... I'm told it's 1000 percent better than the poor p.a. speakers previously in use. Bands need only bring mics and stands ... and plug in ...

keep on rockin'

STILL RECOVERING from last night's SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD

we had, yet again, a full capacity crowd there!! it's as if these shows are taking on a life of their own. I see a lot of same faces hangin' out, but even more important, a lot of NEW ones too....

I was surprised by a guest appearance of none other than the great JET POWERS of EL CAPITAN and THE SCALLYWAGS from Atlanta!! What a hoot!!

www.myspace.com/elcapitansurf

I have seen them perform twice, at last year's and the year prior's CLARKSTON SURF FEST in Georgia which I was lucky enough to host; not sure about this year....

anyway, we kicked things off with THE CRUSTACEANS....from Connecticut this band is a great deal of fun. A family that twangs together as 1 surely will all get along in the house, right? The crowd ate them up. Refreshing to see a 15 year old lad keepin' a neat surf beat!

www.myspace.com/crustaceansrock

STRANGE BUT SURF followed that up. I know a few years back there was a lot of controversy and negativity surrounding these guys...BUT....the MAJOR source of those awful times has long since been thrown out of the band (thank God). They have worked hard at redeeming themselves. And let me say this...they put on a killer surf show, with some rock n roll splashes. The crowd wouldn't let me end their set!

www.myspace.com/strangebutsurf

Up third were THE CHILLERS from the Jersey shore who play, in their words, their own brand of surf...a hybrid of surf, psychedelia, bar band rock n roll, garage, blues...but the emphasis on the twang is there. They never sounded so good...they have played for me a few times prior. Trying to come up with a Jersey shore surf event this summer -- working with their bassist WALLY VAN TREEK....keep you posted.

www.myspace.com/thechillersmusic

Then a band new to me, who were so damn excited to perform at the SHINDIG: MATTY LIOT & the BIG UP. OH.....MY.....GOD.......is all I can say. This power trio, led by 25 year old MATTY LIOT on lead guitar, just shredded!!! Seriously!!!! Matty plays a hybrid of surf (some great classic gems), Hendrix, rock n roll....I was floored at this kids' playing. UN REALLLLLLLL. Gotta have them back soon. The band works their asses off behind him (hey I said asses and behind in the same sentence! Sorry....). Powerful!

www.myspace.com/mattyliotandthebigup

Thanks to all 4 bands for being so on top of their game and for everyone who came out (saw Patty and Paul from The TarantinosNYC, Evan from Venice Beach Muscle Club, Connecticut promoter Bobby D, Rattlesnake Ralph from The Octomen, the Rozars from Witches in Bikinis).

And note: OTTO's got a new tiled floor. Owner Steve Pang said it was from the SHINDIG monies. Should I believe him? No matter, looks sweet.

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

http://www.facebook.com/unsteady.freddie

So great to be able to "drop by" and surprise UNSTEADY FREDDIE!!!

I just wish we could've caught more of the show! We (my wife and I) got there LATE and were only able to catch the last act. We had full day of fun and adventure in NYC and were absolutey beat.

Many thanks to Unsteady Freddie for his hospitality! and of course for bringing and promoting the reverb in NYC (and of course in Atlanta the past two years where he's hosted the Clarkston SurfFest!!).

For the rest o' you SG101ers, you should definitely swing by Otto's and catch a Shindig if'n ya get the chance!

AAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!

Jet

should share this with everyone

I am looking at JET, thinking, I know this guy, but.....from where, again?

is he that rockabilly fan that infrequently drops by my SHINDIGs?

no wait....I see the black jacket, with the white stripe....and the fog in my unsteady brain starts to clear.....I see THE PENETRATORS patch, the S.S.Syndicate on there.....

and as I am about to try and say hello, properly, w/o screwing it up, he says....

"Unsteady Freddie....it's Jet, Jet Powers from El Capitan"

to which I responded, approprietly,

"aaarrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!"

and eventually introduced him to the audience and surf music fanatics who were in the house

a great moment, akin to the time when Gregory Nicoll showed up (he was in town for the Morricone show at Radio City, which, b/c it was on the same night as my SHINDIG, I could not attend)

this is what is so wonderful, for me, about being part of a world-wide community of people who so dig the sound of surf music....so many friends, everywhere....

I was very moved and honored by you guys making the SHINDIG scene Wink

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

http://www.facebook.com/unsteady.freddie

I was mightily impressed Unsteady Freddie!! You got the AAARRRGGGHHHHH! all on yer on own, no prompting!

Keep on keeping on!

Jet
