"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

In no particular order and off the top of my head:

  1. Fender IV - Malibu Run
  2. Crossfires - Fibreglass Jungle
  3. Laika and the Cosmonauts - S.P.Y.D.A.'s Web
  4. Bambi Molesters - Standing On The Nose In A Stylish Manner
  5. The Baronics - Moonlight Sonata
  6. Dick Dale - The Wedge
  7. Laika and the Cosmonauts - O.C.C.C. (Oahu Community Correctional Centre)
  8. The Mermen - Ocean Beach
  9. Planet Seven - 16mm
  10. Jon and the Nightriders - Depth Charge

Oh gee......hummmmmmm. In no particular order.

  1. Baja, the Astronauts' Number one in my book
  2. Miserlou, Dick Dale, Powerful and melodic
  3. Mr Moto, the Belairs, The most fun to play
  4. The Jester, The Jesters, This just smokes
  5. Slaughter on 10th Ave, The Ventures' best recording
  6. Pipeline, the Chantays, most emotion in surf
  7. Movin' the Astronauts, I just love this recording
  8. Dawn Patrol, Jon and the Nightriders our Jon and Paul
  9. The Wedge, Dick Dale, damn.....hot
  10. Redlined, The Penetrators, a true masterpiece

Sure there are many, many more, but if had to have just one CD...those would be on it for sure..........ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Yeah I'm with Brian, I have way too many favorite songs.
its very hard to narrow them down to 10.
it makes my head hurt to try to think about it.

Wow I'm not sure I can do this....

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Come on BTD,
You can do it! You must have your favorites. I am noticing Baja comes up a lot on these lists...a masterpiece that I liked the first time I heard it and still like it no matter who is playing it. Now do that 10 times.

pretty much all of the songs that everyone has posted are way up there in my book.

Its really hard to say what I like best. because I dont pigeonhole my self into one type of surf/instro, I like all of the sub genres.

I'll try to think of some.

I'll put my flame-retardant jumpsuit on for this one...I like Johnny Barakat's version of The Wedge better than Dick's.

Better is bit moot, because the original was pretty good. But I know what you mean. It's new and improved. It adds something nice. I like it when somebody adds a little touch that improves on things. My only objection might be "not the Malaguena riff again." Because so often that is the little touch that people add to a surf song. But this may be one of the first occasions, maybe even the first. I'm a little vague on dates.

I don't have the CD in front of me (I'm goofing off at work), but I'm thinking that Barakat's was from 63-64'. The Malaguena riff hadn't yet become the cliche Smile

What are they? I'm not asking about the biggest hits or songs that most typify the surf sound, but your personal faves- ...

With the usual provisos that there's no special ordering and that this is not for once all time, just kind of current:

  1. Banzai Pipeline - Astronauts

  2. Dream Pipe - Monster Pete & the Chiefs (a bit off the wall)

  3. Exotic - any (but maybe the Orignal Surfaris version is best compromise)

  4. Fathomless - Fathoms

  5. Goofy Foot - Lively Ones (Trashmen OK, too)

  6. Happy as a Clam - Kelp!

  7. Jack the Ripper - Sir Finks or Raybeats
Revellion - any (but say Revels)
Latinia - any (say Jim Waller & the Deltas)
    Wanganui - Bambi Molesters

I cheated by leaving out some of the major hits, and, trying to get down to ten, I left out some similar items, so maybe this is slanted toward variety.

I would've picked Greased Lightning but not everyone has my great ear for brilliance Smile

Chris, you know that the Bitch Boys did the soundtrack for a recent Slovenian musical version of Grease (locally called "Briljantina")?

I'm having a great deal of trouble assembling my list, but a few songs that haven't been mentioned yet that are personal faves of mine:

Pintor - The Pharos
The Victor - DD (and now The Madeira)
Ba-Ha-Ree-Ba pt 1 - The Trademarks
Moment of Truth - various, but Jon & The Nightriders stands out to me
Failsafe - The Original Surfaris
Rumble & Run - The Atlantics
Kilauea - The Volcanos

That isn't quite ten or meant to be my definitive list...

The Atlantics have many, many great songs, but for some reason Rumble & Run stands out to me for being so damn bad-ass tough and mean, especially for the time. I like the stinging guitar intro, the scale climbing tension in the guitar verses followed by the nice dizzying counterpoint in the chorus, the power of the rhythm section, the police sirens, the violent muted guitar glissandos, all in what, 2:45 or something? Wow.

Failsafe by the Original Surfaris is "outta sight"

Great one although I think the original version by the New Dimensions is even more outta sight.
