Man to this day IMO I still feel that this is the best cover version of sleepwalk around!! done by Brian Setzer
It just has so much vibe and mojo, I love it!!
if you get a chance listen to the full band version of Brian's "Sleepwalk" off of "The Dirty Boogie" cd
Thanks Jake for giving me the Setzer bug back

when I saw the title of the thread I thought you were posting this one - better imo. But Setzer does it cool eitherway I agree!

If you get a chance to see his Live in Japan DVD, there is an especially good rendition of it on there, also.

That was pretty bloody good, but then I like Brian's style of playing.
I like how he managed to still get a bit of rockabilly into it.

you mean this one
but there can only be one REAL '68 comeback special ...
image
And as awesome a guitar player Setzer is ( ) he's a mediocre singer and he should stay the hell away from the King's album titles
Seriously, Im a huge Setzer fan, but I went (rather uninformedly) to the " '68 comeback special tour" when they were in town, and I was hugely dissapointed, cause he didnt play Elvis songs. go figure.

I saw him on his "'68 comeback Special" tour as well. Lots of Stray Cats tunes mixed in with plenty of paired down BS Orchestra tunes/covers. Amazing show!
I'm a big rockabilly fan, but was kinda disappointed with his "Rockabilly Riot! Vol. 1 -Tribute to Sun Records" CD. (sheesh... long title!). Great selection of covers and very true to the original performances, but it made me want to dig out my rockabilly records and listen to the "real" versions. IMHO: Setzer's an amazing guitar player , has great tastes in music , but a crooner, he's not. :|
My 2-cents.

Always been a fan of Brian's music from the early days till now but never cared that much for this version of SW off the DB release. Like it till about 2/3 rds in and to me, it gets too far away from the melody. Besides Santo and Johnny, I really like The Shadows version..who also do a great Apache...

He must perform "Sleepwalk" quite a bit. Here's yet another of his stylings of the song.

that's the same version WR posted, except it had another song before it.
you don't think setzer is a good singer? i think his prime was when he was on his 20's. "i won't stand in your way", "lonely summer nights", and hell, even his version of "sixteen candles" are good examples of his great voice.
i even think "since i don't have you" is great as well, and he was in his late 30's when that came out.
wow, i know he's not the absolute greatest singer in the world, but i still love his voice. he didn't even want to be a singer in the first place, so let's at least give him props for that.

Fellow SG101er's my intent was not to cause a rawkuss or a debate but more to share my thoughts on "Sleepwalk" and to spread the love of this song for those that are new to his work or not familiar with his later works and to hear other's feedback and persay not to hear folks rip on him but hey what ever I guess.
True he's sure not a Frank or an Elvis voice wise but the man has already paid his dues he doesn't have to prove him self anymore, he has the musical freedom to touch and try other musical avenues and hell why not.

exactly. im definetely not getting his new album, but i understand that he has a right to go forth and do such a crazy(in my opinion) idea.
jazzed up versions of classical songs? not my cup o' tea at all.
...i don't even like tea anyways.
i wasn't trying to start an arguement, but i've just never heard anyone say anything bad about his voice. not by any means is he the best in the world, but he can hold his own i think.

not to hear folks rip on him
hey Kyle, lighten up man, no one's ripping on him, everyone sais he's great.... my reference to Elvis was more or less a joke, but this part is true, I think the '68 CBS is the best thing Elvis has ever done, and when Setzer did the 3some again after the BSO got big, and it was advertized as 68CBS, I went there expecting an Elvis/Scotty More tribute, and I was let down by what I got. - which is funny cause when I look at the Setzer vids on youtube now with Winchester and Dresel, Im blown away completly. I guess it's all about what you expect, but Im curious as to why he chose to call it the '68CBS with the Elvis reference?
As for his voice, Elvis he aint. I actually think he is a good singer (technically) but he has a mediocre voice - a matter of taste maybe? - I think he's singing A LOT better now though then in his Stray Cat days.
Anyway, everyone in this thread says he's great, right? I think he deserves major props for everything he's done and esp. for reinventing himself. Being a kick ass player and then devoting yourself to getting much better, how cool is that. making the transition from being a three piece old school rockabilly guitarist to being a bigband leader and jazzcat, that's awesome. I think he does some of the arranging for the BSO too but Im not sure.
anyway, all hail Setzer for sure!

It's all good WR I hear ya man, I am not 1 bit upset, everyone is open to speak thier mind and what I meant was I didn't want folks to rip on each other, I am not a big ass fan of his I don't have posters of him on my walls or know every single thing of his life or own every sinlge lp/cd, it's simple man I just dig his stuff the Stray Cats & Solo some of it sucks some of it rocks.

allrighty Kyle
well, I migt do an 180 on my opinions regarding his technique and his voice.... I just came across which I think is mindblowing in it's purity:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=peGWkVKLCPU
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=EJIYC2U2jxs
the guy posted more form that session so keep clicking...
anyway, his singing is great here. Im not a singing expert by any means, but it sounds to me he's simply singing less loud here then he usually does, almost in a Johnny Cash kinda way, and it makes his voice sound way better, as if when he sings louder it creates out of tune overtiones and now it doesn't? that's what it sounds like to me, anyway, dig these clips!!!!

Those clips are great WR! Impressive that he can keep my attention with just his guitar and voice in those clips. I'd sure like to be able to do that! (play and sing I mean, not keep my own attention)
Those clips were 15 years ago - 15 years of cigarettes has made his voice a lot harsher I think. I'm used to hearing him now, but I heard a seldom played track from the early Stray Cats days, and his voice then was much higher and nicer than it is now.
His playing is always great - On the Live in Japan DVD, his big band starts with Hawaii 5-0, and it sounds fantastic. The horns really do it for me in certain situations.

Wow, that's cool with the pick.
Personally, I've always been pretty jealous of the hair myself.
