Permalink Ahoy surf rockers, I have a question about a sound I’m trying to emulate!

New Topic

I should start with the gear I have to work with, and what I am looking to achieve. Currently jamming on a Fender Squier 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster, Vintage Edition, a Fender '68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb-Amp 2-Channel 35-Watt 2x10" Guitar Combo and a Catalinbread Pareidolia Harmonic Mesmerizer.

I’m looking for a good distortion pedal, and this sound specifically has me playing on repeat: https://youtu.be/gs8EdlomUzs

If one of you can point me into the right direction, I’d love to start producing some music that sounds like this. And thank you again for the warm welcome!

I think it’s just his amp cranked up.

Yeah, doesn't sound much like a distortion pedal, and more like overdriven amp. Since you've got a rather loud amp, you probably don't want to have to crank it that high very often, so I'd say look for a mild overdrive pedal or maybe a boost pedal to overdrive your amp.

Agree with edwardsand -

I've got a Vibrolux and it's a cool amp (I wanted to see what 2x10 would do for me) but it is indeed loud. Probably louder than I will ever need - I digress.

Getting that sound without cops getting called (in my neck of the woods), requires either an attenuator or an overdrive Find yourself a pedal marketed as a "transparent overdrive". Don't go nuts (ala KLON), just try one out, dial in a little dirt and see what works for ya.

Welcome to the forum Surfpsycho! Look at the class of pedals designed to emulate preamp sections of tube echoes, I use a dyno-brain which is based on the Roland Space Echo, but there's lots of others. They create just a bit of grit and some nice color, in conjunction with a spring reverb should get you close.

EDIT: also if you go the amp sim route with Garageband or Logic, you'll be amazed how close you can get.

Will peep around and find a good one. Thanks man!

The Nobels ODR-1 is an amazingly good overdrive, which ranges from a very transparent sound to sort of a creamy Santana-like sound, and they are not all that costly. If you want to move more in the Centaur Klon direction, the MXR Sugar Drive is excellent.

I suggest looking into the Earthquaker Devices Special Cranker. Affordable and probably not hard to locate. I have been using one for the past few months.
There are a number of demo videos available but this is the one that I think is most representative of how I use it and the tones that I get from it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_W1-JqJXYk (not my video, BTW).
The Special Cranker is effectively the new (improved, I guess) version of their Speaker Cranker pedal...that is what drew me into checking it out in the first place.

I think Klon/Tube Screamer/ODR-1-type pedals can work and I have used them all in various contexts (Surf and otherwise... I enjoy using a J Rockett Archer Ikon and Wampler Belle but those are used more for my Top-40 covers band rather than Surf).
They all have their place!
The Special Cranker seems to be a bit more vintage old speaker-y in the results I get but it does not shelve-off/boost certain ranges of frequencies that I find with any number of OD pedals.

I own and really like this pedal from our own TVTheWiredTurtle:

Of all the OD's I own, this sounds the most like a cranked BF Fender.
