I’ve always subscribed to the Dick Dale maxim that a P-bass was used for surf. Were Jazz basses ever used during the classic (early-mid 60’s) era? If so, can you point me towards some examples?

It's pobably hard to make a completely certain statement, since even back then people changed instruments every once and a while, but I have seen Jazz Basses pretty much exclusivley in pictures of the Astronauts and Eddie & the Showmen, so these are probably a good starting point. —Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin) |

I played bass in surf bands for several years in the 1990's into 2012 and I used a Fender Jazz bass all the time. A Jazz bass can sound like a Precision just by tweaking the bridge pickup knob. —Jack The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005) |
