My 65 Twin is out of storage, in shop getting re-tubed, and repaired. Super clean at high volume (as advertised). Need to know best overdrive pedal/box or solution to:
- give it just a little dirt to mimic a tube amp overdrive, not distortion
- bought a Wampler Tumnus, but it seems to color sound a bit more than I would like.
- Has anyone used a pedal with actual tubes in it to get this sound?

I have been using an MXR Timmy for a little hair. It is advertised to be a "transparent" overdrive. You can get a range of tones from it.

Maybe an MXR Microamp or MXR Sugar Drive?

I use EHX’s Soul Food for adding a bit of tube dirt to a clean amp.

If you don't use the normal channel, you could remove the V1 preamp tube from it. That's the tube all the way on the right if you're looking at the back of the amp. This increases the gain on the preamp stage of the vibrato channel. It doesn't harm anything and is easily reversible if you don't like the results. Best of all it's free.

Try a Lovepedal Les Lius,I use it all the time and so does dave wronski...who hooked me on it. In fact most Lovepedal pedaös work well for that...I can also recommed a Super six or the purple plexi, if you need more crunch...

I use a Wampler Pantheon, which is like a Marshall Bluesbreaker. I've used Bluesbreaker clones for the same thing. I just like the additional EQ of the Pantheon.

I used Soul Food for it, nice
Now use One Control Sonic Blue Twanger or Cranberry Overdrive, you also may drive combo with it, but with with some coloring that I like.

Anyone try one of these?
Electrode Tube Overdrive with 3 12AX7s
I've used an Effectrode Blackbird with my Twin Reverb to good effect. I've stopped playing electric (due to my tinnitus...) and am selling the Blackbird if you're interested. Very few hours on it and it's like new.

I use a plain old boss bd-2 set very low on the gain (never above 10/11 o’clock) and it gives me that raunchy and bright edge-of-breakup sound like on Link Wray’s records. I find it sounds quite natural, like an old champ breaking up.

bd-2 is great. i avoided them for years because of the name without realizing exactly what they were capable of. it has kicked plenty of ‘boutique’ overdrives off my board.
