Permalink My take on Mr. Moto

New Topic

Whenever I learn a song, I like to work on the original. So, when I learned Mr. Moto, I decided to transcribe the piano solo to guitar, and that’s how I play it now. It’s full of fourths and thirds and comes across well on guitar, I think. I haven’t really gone searching, but I’ve not heard Mr. Moto played this way. Most guitar versions follow The Ventures version?

Also, since there’s no bass guitar on the original version, I made up my own bass line. It’s a walking bass which I think goes well with the syncopation that’s in the song.

I uploaded tabs for these (thanks, Brian), and I hope a few people here find these useful.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

How about a recording, so we can hear your bassline in context?

I did my own arrangement of Mr. Moto. I added a bassline, and created a double lead line in the B section.

Agreed. We must hear this version in full.

Will do. Thanks for asking.

It’s strange, but I never noticed that there is no bass in Mr.Moto

PJ himself has stated that that there wasn't a bass on <Mr. Moto.

After many takes, here’s my version of Mr. Moto: https://surfguitar101.com/downloads/details/928/.

The piano transcription to guitar starts at about 49 seconds in. The lead guitar is my Strat with bridge and neck on. There’s some reverb and delay through a pedal. The bass is my Maestro-branded Matsumoku hollowbody--neck pickup at first and then bridge after the piano break. Again, with some reverb. There’s some reverb added in the final mix. I play at a little slower tempo than the original.

I enjoyed your version of Mr. Moto. Great job on the double stop picking of the piano section. I started learning this song about six months ago and am still working to improve my overall tempo and also consistency in the arpeggio section. Anyway, Well done.
