Hi everyone! I was thinking about some nice surfy amp to buy for home practice, cause now I play NUX micro amp that is surely great, but not always) I’ve managed to take only it and a Jazzmaster while escaping to Germany plus SurfyBear Compact for sure and a couple of small pedals! So no effects in need, just a clean amp.
Buying something like Fender Princeton seems to be not a good idea cause I will not probably be able to take it back to Ukraine, the car was full even on the way here. So, I got to Quilter idea plus some budget cab! But what Quilter and what cab? Surely budget is limited as well…
Is it a good idea under the circumstances?

Hi Vitaly!

I am so happy that you and your family are safe. I can't begin to imagine what you've been through.

I think the Quilter SuperBlock US would be ideal for your needs. You can play through headphones, or it provides a choice of one watt (with 9v power supply), or 25 watts (@8 ohms) (with their 24 volt power supply).
https://www.quilterlabs.com/index.php/product/superblock-us/
https://www.quilterlabs.com/manuals/1839/001293_-_usa_rev_a_web_manual.pdf

They also make a SuperBlock UK, if you prefer Vox (or Marshall?) voicings. https://www.quilterlabs.com/index.php/product/superblock-uk/

Both can be run through headphones, without a speaker load. Both models include two Cab Sims and an FRFR mode on the XLR Out and headphone out.

The 101 Reverb head offers up to 50 watts. It has headphone out, and more basic cab sim. https://www.quilterlabs.com/index.php/product/101-reverb/

I hope this helps.

Hi Vitaly,

I agree with Bob’s advice. I have a Superblock US and love it! I can a variety of vintage fender sounds (it has modelling for 3 vintage amps, plus the cab sims Bob mentioned). It is great for recording, headphone practice, and low volume gigs with a speaker cab. I use this direct into a PA for some non surf theatre shows I do. It is quick to set up and sounds great in that context too.

Thank you Rob! Yep, trying to be back to some normal life again.

Concerning Superblock - I thought it’s a kind of preamp pedal? If it can be used as a full amp with some cabinet, it’s seem to be really a great option!

I think that you will be very happy with that rig, Vitaly. It's amazing that Quilter could fit a 25w power amp, and all those features into such a small sized package. Warmest regards to you and your family from the USA.

hope you enjoy it! though i’m not a big fan, my quilter is just fine for noodling at home with the reverb tank in front of it.

the modern class D amplifiers have a sound i don’t love on guitar, but adore on bass and in live audio. you can have a 500watt power amplifier in a 6 inch square.

I would love that rig. I have the 101 mini head and a Micropro Mach II. I sold my tube amps, except for an Excelsior and that doesn't get used anymore. I play out with them once a week, never a problem. The Quilters are not modeling amps, they are analog except for the digital reverb. Here's an article about why they sound so good:
https://georgedyermusic.com/2016/11/24/how-do-quilter-amps-work/

So, thank you for all the advice. I pretty much enjoy this setup, tight solid sound with nice dynamics and overtones. Also as a solid state it may be quiet or loud with nice sound in both.

Hi Vitaly,

That is a great looking rig! It is wonderful to know that you are able to play surf music again. Nice how the amp and the Surfy Bear compact reverb fit neatly on the cabinet for a tidy look. I'm sure it sounds super.

Speaking of the cabinet, I have the same one, but from Monoprice. At least my research indicates that the Stage Right Monoprice 1x12 with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers is the same as the Harley G112. I don't think that cab has any competition for the price. I got mine new for $149 USD. The Celestion Vintage 30 speaker alone costs $145 from Stewmac. I use it with a variety of mini amp heads that I have picked up on sale. I have tried it with a Joyo Bantamp Meteor (Orange Hi-gain sound, but has a decent clean channel for pedals), Hotone British Invasion (Vox AC30 sound), and Hotone Mojo Attack (two channels: channel A is a Fender Tweed, channel B is Mesa Rectifier). All of which sound very good, but I think the Quilter is a better amp overall and you made the right choice with it.

Yep, it suits cabinet great, but I guess I will need to get them down to join the Digitech Trio that I use for drums/bass machine and looper. Or I will try to fit some longer cables cause SurfyBear needs to be in the loop of Digitech. The cab costs 149 euro and really is a winner with Celestion Vintage 30!
