Permalink Echo function on Oceans 11

New Topic

I'd like to add a second echo/delay pedal on my board. My first choice would be my old DanEcho pedal, but it's too big. I'm wondering if the Electro-Harmonix Oceans 11 pedal's echo function warrants buying the Oceans 11 chiefly for the echo?
I already have an Ibanez mini analog echo on my board, which is okay for some things. I'm thinking that the other functions of the Oceans 11 would come in handy, but I already have a Fender FRV-1 pedal, which I like a lot, on my board and I have a Mr Black tremolo and a Surfy Bear reverb outboard and a Fender reissue reverb outboard. So, I don't really need the Oceans 11 for reverb. Like I said, I'm mostly interested in how the echo function is, but the videos I've found for the reverb and some of the other functions do sound great. Unfortunately, the echo demos in those videos are minimal.
There are multiple discussions online about DanEcho clones. The chip that was used is apparently no longer made. My DanEcho is truly amazing. I have tried a lot of echo/delay pedals and, to my mind, nothing comes close; however, any other recommendations are welcome! I use the Ibanez for a single repeat with a slight delay, in order to give me a fuller sound. When I increase the repeats, I have to be very careful, because a bit past 12:00 the self-oscillation starts. That's difficult to do at a gig, even though I put larger knobs on that pedal. What I'm looking for is a pedal that will be more suitable for rautalanka-type songs.
Thanks!

I will have to actually give the echo setting on mine a try and get back with you.

I have, after owning the pedal for over a year, finally started utilizing some of the other settings while playing with my other, not surf, band. And I have been just as impressed as I am with the Spring setting.

It was pretty nice for some subtle delay, I’ve used it a lot before going to standalone delay pedal. However I surely will not buy it for echo only.

I have an Oceans 11 and use it mostly for the reverb functions for pedal steel - the spring reverb is pretty good and usable, even for surf. But I generally use either a real 6G15 or Topanga for surf. I have used the Oceans 11 delay, which is OK, but fairly minimalistic. I see this pedal as useful for a real small board where I only have room for one time-based pedal, and I don't need reverb and delay concurrently.

But I would not buy this as a standalone delay pedal. IMO, there are much better choices for less money. I picked up a J. Rockett Immortal Echo Delay pedal from a big-box store for $60 when they were blowing them out over Xmas - it's a good, solid delay pedal with a very small form factor, by a good maker. Reverb has them pretty close to that price. And there are many, many others. I picked up a couple of those cheap Rogue 'Analog' (not really analog) delays for $25 apiece on a sale a few years ago. Pretty good for cheap as long as you don't need super short or long delays. There are a bunch of decent but inexpensive delays out there these days.

Of course, if you wanna spend some money, there are a ton of great delays out there. Beware of the 'analog delay' label. A lot of so-called 'analog' or 'analog-sounding' delays are powered by the PT2399 digital delay chip, including that Rogue. I believe my Mad Professor Deep Blue, the J. Rockett I mentioned above, and many others, use this chip. This is not to say they don't sound good - I like them - but they are not true bucket-brigade analog-amplitude/sampled-data delays.

My favorite delay pedal is the Nocturne Mystery Brain, which works great with inboard/outboard tube reverbs and my Mr Black Deluxe Deluxe Plus #nocturnebrainpedals #mysterybrain

I had to look that one up. I listened to a few sample os rautalanka songs on youtube. Very nice!

Anyway, I'm new to pedals, so I may not be much help, but I do have a Catalinbread EchoRec delay pedal which I use when I play songs by The Shadows and other non-surf 1960's instrumentals.

Thanks for all the responses! For now I’m going to look for a dedicated echo/delay pedal, including some of those mentioned. At some point, I’m fairly sure that I’ll still end up buying an Oceans 11. Not for the echo, but maybe to replace my FRV-1 reverb and my Mr Black tremolo. Thanks for the good advice!
