Thats what many bands are trying to do. Some might say its selling out. But if you love music(and I sure do) you want to create something that everyone can remeber. Alice Cooper anyone?

I like a lot of different stuff too, but I wanna represent the other side for a minute:

I don't tell people I like lots of different music (even though I do). I tell people the two or three genres I like SPECIFICALLY and don't mention anything else. The reason is that I'm really only a "fan" of those genres because those are the only types of music I PURSUE; everything else is stuff I happened to pick up.

Now, let me say up front that I know this is bigoted stereotyping on my part; the instant music comes up and I hear somebody say, "Oh, I like everything," it makes me cringe. There are a lot of real music fans out there and a lot of them mean it, but the majority of people just listen to the radio and get into whatever's current. There's nothing wrong with that and that's as far as most people will ever get into music; their record collections will gather dust as the music becomes dated and their tastes are changed by the next thing that comes along.

Pretty much everyone I know that gives the whole, "Oh, I like everything" spiel looks down their nose at anybody that's really into a certain genre (though making it visibly apparent makes you an easy target). They think it makes them worldlier than thou because I've only got two genres represented in my car stereo at the moment and they've got...a collection of current top 40 albums from every popular mainstream genre. Way to go, Mr. Cosmopolitan. I'll buy each one of those albums from you for a nickel to use as drink coasters in a few years when it's all considered passe'. These same people also tend to have the mentality that if it's NOT mainstream, then it must be terrible, because if it weren't more people would be listening to it. Then they accuse you of the same bigotry, only reversed.

For a lot of people "I like everything" really means, "I don't really like anything, I listen to music passively." Like I said, there's nothing wrong with that, but when people get uppity about it gets my goat.

For me, surf periodically trades the #1 slot with Ramones-style pop punk. I like most rock 'n roll but to gravitate towards the faster stuff, and I really like rockabilly from any period. I like a lot of varied pop music from different decades, am very selective when it comes to country, and do not listen to any type of rap music.

And, of course, "I like anything that's good."

Man, I LOVE The Lillingtons, but I'm a bigger fan of the older stuff. Shit Out Of Luck is one of the greatest of all time. I actually had a chance to see them and blew it...I got to the venue late, thinking that the show would start on the late side (as usual) but I got there just in time to see Kody's back as he exited the stage. That was the night I bought Death By Television on LP, which is my personal favorite of all of them. It had just come out. I remember Joe Queer came and stood at the bar next to me for about ten minutes after the show. It was kinda surreal.

As for The Riverdales, heck yeah. I'm a big fan of Screeching Weasel too. What pop punk bands are you currently listening to? I just got Dave Parasite's "Pop Punk's Not Dead" comp and there are some good new bands on there, though it kind of strays from the pure vision of the likes of The Lillingtons and The Riverdales.

Hmm, I currently just listen mainly to The Lillingtons and The Riverdales, which I mentioned above. I saw The Lillingtons live once when they toured with The Queers. I like them quite a bit too--I've probably seen The Queers live at least ten times. They always played this shitty little bar here in Columbus called Bernie's, and they recently released a live album that was recorded there (titled 'Weekend at Bernie's'). I wasn't at that show, though. I also like SW, but don't really listen to them too much anymore--I like The Mopes, some stuff by The Methadones, and The Huntingtons, too.

Oh, and Alex, I know of Frankenstein Drag Queens. When it comes to horror rock, though, I'm more into Blitzkid. I like Calabrese too, and of course, The Misfits. 'Static Age' is one of my favorite albums ever.

Too true. All I need in life is that album, my Jazzmaster, and my Harry Potter books.

Anybody here know High Tide? It's like Jethro Tull meets Black Sabbath meets Jim Morisson meets Stephane Grapelli... though that's maybe a bit too simple to put it. It's psychedelic, weird, sometimes absurd and at first I hated it but now I love it. It's the kind of stuff you really have to dig in and give it a few listening sessions before the treasure starts showing. Some trash also, but I don't know any band who doesn't have at least one song I'd rather skip. Also I can't listen to it for too long at a time, it's like an assault on my brain.

Matter is just energy waiting to happen.

Yeah, they're definitely a like/hate thing for me, too - interesting sound, but not too many great songs (or even parts of songs). And the violin definitely grates after a little while.
