Brian / Moderators,

No one can deny the gravity of what is going on right now. Nevertheless, there are countless better, more appropriate outlets and avenues for information, communication, assistance and expression about it.

What had to have been an incredibly agonizing decision to remove the conversation here, no doubt, is in the best interest of this site and community for the long haul.

Thank You for that.

Yep. Though I did appreciate having a relatable and direct connection for perspective, I understand how it's a moderating nightmare and I can respect the decision to stick to the established rules.

Your last line here, sir, sums up my feelings quite well. I'm not going to bash Brian; often people have as their default position the rule to move to that default position.

I think that initial thread had a chance to go a completely different direction, much as many here would empathize with others who might be enduring a hurricane, or an earthquake, without it becoming all about "climate change."

I'm contacting Vitaly directly as I have before because I don't and won't do Facebook, so email is the only way.
Cheers all.

Too bad that the one 'open' forum area can't be used in such a fashion, to have people dust themselves off as adults, and go back to their mutual love & creation of instrumental surf music.

I have to say that I strongly disagree with the decision of deleting the post of Vitaly.

This is recognised as the greatest and heaviest and most dangerous crisis since WWII and it's not exactly a political post which would make no sense on a music forum. This is a person, member of this community, friend to many of us, who is in serious difficulties, who wants to share his thoughts and possibly find support and comfort also here from all of us. This guy 1 month ago was on a stage playing his Strat and now he may have to handle a gun instead. And around here in Europe we are all shitting in our pants.

So YES, if this is a community of friends, that post belongs HERE.

You are free to delete this message of course.

This ^^^^. Surf musicians are not insulated from the world community at large. We are part of it first. When one of our brothers is facing one of the greatest threats humanity could face and is able to share his thoughts and in some way gain strength and encouragement, it's the least we can do to be here for him. Social media aside, Vitaly chose us for strength that he desperately needs. This is part of his inner core....right here.

my two cents....
Vitaly took a few guitar lessons from me in 2020 and i really enjoyed teaching a guy from the Ukraine some surf guitar tricks and essential guitar knowledge. It definitely showed how close the world has grown together...a German guitarist and an Ukrainian find together over Californian music...that‘s wonderful.
It‘s shocking how fast things can change...instead of talking about surf music, it‘s about staying alive, saving your family and joining the army to defend your country.
Personally i feel overwhelmed by this situation. i‘d like to help, but as an individual human being there‘s not a lot i ( or other members of this forum) can do to stop this war. i‘m sure, if money, personal support or something else could improve Vitaly‘s situation, a lot of people would offer it right away. i would.
on the other hand i‘m sure that heated discussions, angry talk and accusing other people will not be useful in this situation. it will not solve this crisis, will not help Vitaly or the Ukrainian people.

i can totally understand that Brian doesn‘t feel like moderating a topic like that that can go out of control any moment.

maybe we should ask Vitaly if there‘s something we could do to improve his situation?
i‘m sure this would help more than blaming or insulting each other or leave this place, where we can communicate with other surf musicians and surf afficonados....

Well said Tikidog. I've seen some people offering to take him in (and I assume his family). I think in France. Here in the states we feel pretty helpless too. I'm planning on writing my congressperson. Don't know if they'll even listen, but I feel I gotta keep trying to do something.

Surf, the most dangerous of all musical genres...

One thing I’ve learned from being a forum member and a forum moderator, is that controversy of any sort is like a fire. I don’t blame Vitaly for wanting to post about his situation, but the global nature of the Internet all but assures that there will be others that see things differently. On the handful of instances where I’ve overlooked political content in a thread, I have always ended up having to delete the thread.

My best wishes to Vitaly.

Hi.

I took a few days off for mental health reasons.

I was very surprised and relieved by the new posts in this thread that I missed while gone.

I will just say a few things.

There is still one thread we can use to keep in touch with Vitaly with links on how to send financial support. Please don't go in the weeds there (or maybe it already has, I haven't read it yet). I received a private message from someone who said they had been in contact with Vitaly and Vitaly indicated he would try to get back here to SG101 when he had a chance. That is great news.

Turbotripper you aren't welcome here with that attitude. I don't mind being told to go fuck myself from time to time but please don't say stuff like that to other members. It's fine you disagree with me, lots of people do.

After the ruckus I was very close to retiring the site and had already started thinking about how to do it. I don't think I'm ready to do that now.

Finally, guys, please bear with me. I'm a dumb 54-year old computer programmer who (a long time ago) setup a Yahoo Group and then a website for surf stuff. I have spent many hundreds (thousands?) of hours of my own time programming this site and keeping it running. I love surf music and I love computers. However I never got a course on being a moderator, and as an introvert, human nature often eludes me. I have learned a lot, mostly the hard way. As you know, we setup some basic rules at the very beginning about not having hot button topics (learning lessons from the old Cowabunga email list). But the pre-cursor to WWIII and having a member in danger obviously strained or even caused us to maybe break those rules. I'm trying but you'll have to bear with me. In the future I will try to perhaps start a meta thread about a bad thread to better gauge the members feelings before taking unilateral actions.

Thank you guys, you are the best.

I can't imagine what Vitaly and his countrymen are going through. All of our thoughts are with them.

Knowing you IRL the little bit I do, Brian, your humble update is no surprise. I am immensely thankful you didn’t pull the plug on the site.

You have single handedly enabled a global connection for thousands to learn, share, agree and argue about a thousand things surf music. Your reach and impact is beyond belief. Do not underestimate the number of lives you have forever changed for the better.

I hope that not for one second would anyone think the steps necessary to preserve THAT gift is in any way, shape or form a message of disagreement, lack of support, empathy or humanity for the person/people at the heart of this conversation and situation. To pose an ultimatum of ‘you care about the people and situation or you do not’ because of decisions made about content on THIS site would be myopic, narrow minded and simply unjust and unfair.

Like virtually all posts here, this is one persons opinion, and no doubt, will not be shared by at least a few, some, perhaps most of the membership. And that is ok.

Thank YOU, Brian for your blood, sweat and tears spent on this conversation and all things SG101.

I want to send my appreciation for your efforts in keeping this site going. Forums are challenging and I suspect that many people think that forums make lots of money. In most cases, they don’t.

In my humble opinion, you made the right call regarding Vitaly’s thread, both by allowing it in the first place (I wanted to know what was going on) and in eventually removing it when things heated up. As much as I am adverse to politics on a guitar forum, in this case the exception seemed justified. The problem is that forum topics can easily escalate and that seems to be the rule, not the exception. If it’s a discussion of pickups, strings or amplifiers, no big problem, but when it comes to matters of lives and livelihoods, such escalation can get out of hand quickly. Sometimes moderating is like being a firefighter, and it’s not about the subject matter, but about limiting damage to the forum.

Brian, I think sometimes you do so well with this site and alot of us really admire you and the friendships you've brought together with SG101, that we forget you're just human, like the rest of us.

There will always be post'ers that attack others, sometime they're just that type, other times they let their emotions get the best of them. I've been the latter a few times.

Hang in there and know there are a lot more of us that support you than want to tell you to frig off. Just say the word and we'll gather the wagons around you.

Is locking a thread an option instead of deleting it when someone breaches the terms and conditions of this site? I think Brian does a great job. Just wondering if there’s an alternative to losing all the posts when things go too far.

Hi there) Thank you for all the support here and in personal messages! It’s precious. I try to answer all the letters, but so many of them!!! I’ve got not much time right know but may come with some personal updates if you like. May be in the thread This is Samurai?)

I think Brian is right, you may receive new from various sources, the European or USA media are more or less correct in bringing the news, at leasts as far as I see.

I am amazed of you concern on the subject of deleted threads but I think administration does it’s job great and should not be blamed or accused for anything.
