It can work well too - you just have to work at it a little bit. I'd like to say that I have pretty quick guitar changes onstage. What's best is to have someone else in the band who can banter a bit while there are tuning/guitar change moments onstage. I forget who I saw, but it was a major show, and there were 30-45 seconds minimum of DEAD SILENCE after each song while the band checked up on their tuning.
People have to remember that being onstage is a matter of keeping people entertained and keeping a little flow between songs. Guitar switches can be smooth, but they can also take FOREVER if you're not too used to it.

I have always been a Fender Strat kindof dude, but recently I bought a G&L Legacy, and I have to say it plays better than any Fender I have ever owned, including the Jag. I also have a Fender Squire Showmanster with a floyd Rose set up, and that guitar really rocks and has great tones.

I have yet to find the perfect surf guitar, but I have found that I like the Mosrite M88 the best. The sound and tone is close, but it may just be my amp combo as well. I may look for the perfect match for the rest of my life and never find it, but I can think of no quest more fun!

My Jaguar is the best I have. I did just buy a Jazzmaster but it is factory fresh which means the strings are to skinny and whimpy. It needs to be set to surf mode before I can compare it to the Jag. I also play surf with my Mustang.

Wow I can't believe I read the 17 pages of this thread, I like Jazzmasters but my favorite surf guitar and therefore favorite guitar would have to be either a Jaguar or a Stratocaster, I'm planning to buy a Classic Series 60's Stratocaster very soon , but my dream guitar would be an American Vintage Reissue Surf Green Jaguar with tortoise pickguard...

You can get get a good surf sound with almost any guitar. So long as you have a tank. As for the guitar itself I like vintage non-traditional guitars. I am tired of seeing guitars that you can get off of a guitar center wall (the walmart of music).

I use a Cole Clark Telecaster, I have an American Deluxe Strat and use that a bit, but there's just something about the Tele sound and playability that is "it" for me.
I'll post a pick soon.

I have made a modifacation to my Strat that lets me dial in the front PU using the bottom tone control. This helped to add a little bit of that "whump" you get from a Jag.
I like the way Jag/JM guitars look but I have to make my Strat work. . . for now. Surf Rules

This guitar is on offer for $950 (aus) I think it looks like good value, but looks can be decieving.
One of the reasons I'm considering a Jazzmaster is the Tremolo, yep the tremolo on my Strat causes the tuning to go out if I even think of using it and I want to use that sucker, I want to dip and dive to the bottom of the well.
I'd like to know what you lot think of this guitar, it's a jap reissue, not sure how old.

I have to say that my favorite for surf has to be a Jazz Master. Only because I own one, (Hee,hee.) But I think a JM & a Jag would be a tie, 2nd would be a Strat. I also use a Daphne Blue Mustang on occasion. For rhythm work I use a 335 style korean import w/P-90's.

I just joined here, but my favorite surf guitar is the Schecter Hellcat. They can be purchased fairly cheaply and there are different models (I have the 2005)

I just picked up this guitar and I really like it. Its a Gemtone, possibly made by Aria. The neck is great, it plays like butter and chords are fun to play on it.

I also got an old LP copy with built in effects. I've never had an LP..the effects are good. It has...treble/normal, boost/distortion, and phaser.

I'm very torn between the Jazzmaster and Jag for surf tone. I own both, and I like the JM better overall, but the Jag sure does have those percussive sounds I love...

My main guitar is a Jaguar, I use a refin 62 sunburst with the Eradicators and a blue CIJ (with SD antiquities, US trem & mint PG) with another band.
I have Jazz's, which I only really use for rythm, when I'm recording. I play a strat pretty regularly, though, and often bring a strat as a back-up to the Jag.
I enjoy alternating between the two, they have different sounds that I enjoy. Personally, I find the Jag somewhat easier to play than a strat, but the strat's ok too.
The biggest drawback to the strat, in my view, is also part of its allure-- it's sort of a "generic" electric guitar sound, because of frequent use, etc/ As Ivan and other point out, there's no doubting you can get a "surf" tone out of a stratocaster. It's just a more "generic" surf tone, in some ways; I do find that both Jag & JM have a more "unusual" or "atypical" sound, sorta plinky rather than sustaining, thinner in the case of the Jag, warmer in the case of the JM... I occasionally try oddball guitars (like Eko's), also for a different sound than the "generic" rock'n'roll guitar sound (although it's a great rock'n'roll sound) that you get from the strat.
As has often been said, it's a matter of taste. In my view, there's no "one" surf guitar.
