Permalink LA Area Setup/Repair Resource Recommendation: Nomadic Guitar

New Topic

Hey!

Just a head's up...anyone looking for a really good setup/repair guy in the LA area, do not hesitate to make an appointment with Steve at Nomadic Guitar.

https://nomadicguitar.com

He's an officially authorized Fender repair specialist, really "gets" their specs and does an amazing, thorough job.

The logistics are super convenient as well--he picks up all across LA: Glassel Park (near where the 2 and 5 meet), Echo Park, Venice and even Idyllwild!

Tell him Jonpaul sent ya!

Thanks Jonpaul, it's good to get a strong recommendation for a guitar tech. I bought a new Strat last summer and although I have no complaints playing it as set up by the factory, at some point, maybe later this year, I'd like to take it in and have it checked.

It's a tricky thing, you know? There are so many variables. On the one hand, you want to be pro and do it yourself, but perhaps you just don't have the knack for it. Then there's the frustration of not knowing who to trust. There are a gazillion techs out there, where does one even begin to choose?

I can honestly report that Steve improved my #1 player by leaps and bounds. It is physically more enjoyable to play and the sound has improved dramatically (pickup foam had deteriorated and they were too far from the strings). I will be bringing in all of my other main players.

Also, there's something to be said for just letting go of pride and/or stubbornness and trusting that someone else knows more than you and can do a better job. As good as one might think they are at these things, a real full-time luthier has done it infinitely more times and the knowledge is second nature. Let everyone do what they do best.

I did adjust the pickup height and adjusted the floating trem to Fender specs, (far from a complete set up), however, I felt hesitant, since one little screw up, an over tightening of something or an unwanted scratch, I know I'd regret it.

I dropped my Stratocaster off at Nomadic Guitar today for a check up. Steve and Troy seem like a very detail oriented techs. JonPaul, I appreciate the recommendation!
