Permalink Blog Sites That Give Away Surf / Garage / Rockabilly Music

New Topic

In recent months I have noticed a few music blog websites that are making surf, instro, garage and rockabilly CD's and LP's available for free download. I'm not going to list the specific sites here, since they don't need any more promotion than they are already getting (one was even featured in Rolling Stone recently!). I have found our Penetrators, Bonney & Buzz and Madeira CD's on these sites - each of them downloaded between 150 - 500 times each before being deleted. I have also stepped in to remove shares of the Spaghetti, For A Few Guitars More and Beyond the Beach comps that feature Double Crown artists. Although my focus is on Double Crown releases, I have also seen many CD's by members of Surf Guitar 101 on these blog sites.

Now I know everyone has a different opinion about downloading free music. Personally, I don't have a huge problem with it if the music being shared is an LP that is out of print and has little-to-no chance of being reissued. Out of print CD's are okay too, as long as the band/label involved knows about it and is cool with it (I think the recent share of the Fifty Foot Combo - Evil A Go Go CD/LP falls into this catagory). However, when the given CD is still in print, then there's obviously a huge problem.

So, what I'm asking here is that if you come across a CD or LP being shared that probably shouldn't be, please ask the website to remove the CD/LP. If the file is being shared through Rapidshare or a similar service, please report it to them (their email is: abuse@rapidshare.com).

Yeah, I had seen the Madeira and new Ghastly Ones cds on a blog within a couple weeks of both being released. That's pretty f'd up.

I've never ripped off a Surf cd off the web.

However, I download quite a bit of non-surf stuff. I almost always buy the CD if I like it. Sometimes I buy their entire catalog, their vinyl, and t-shirts. I use Soul Seek and it is the best way to download entire albums. I won't download anything but an entire album as you can't judge the quality of an artist by one song, in my opinion. The happiness of discovering a new band is one of the best feelings and illegally downloading only increases the frequency of this.

I found a site giving away the Sundazed "Lost Legends Of Surf Guitar" series! Jeez, what incentive does Sundazed have for future editions of they're just gonna be given away on the internet....

And no, I'm not gonna post a link to the site, although I now realize that the subject line of this thread makes it sound like it's to publicize sites giving away free music....
