here's a thought. 60s instrumental music inspired by tons of different things only really became surf music nationally because teenagers in bikinis and beach Adonises cheating death in the ocean were ultimately way more exciting and marketable to 60s youth than satellites, spies, and cowboys. Only hotrods could threaten that, because girls nowhere near the beach still liked cars... better than satellites, spies and cowboys, anyway.

Genres are about marketing, as much as anything else. If the sound of Surf Music had come along when there was a basketball fad or a Cowboy fad, it could have been branded along those lines. Surfing was gaining a lot of traction in the public consciousness right about that time, and I must admit, the sound of powerful guitars and reverb does dovetail nicely with the roar of the ocean.
