Permalink Danelectro 90s Baritone U2 strings to use?

New Topic

All,
Just pulled my 1990s Korean Danelectro Baritone surf green U2 out of storage. In process of cleaning it up. Can't remember what strings it used. What do you think team?

What tuning are you going to use?

Though I don’t usually use their strings on my regular guitars (preference), I like the d’addario nickel wound baritone 14-68 set on my baritone strat which I have tuned a-a. It was one of the few sets that was a thicker gauge (beneficial since I’m tuned a little lower than the more common b-b).

Sorry I wasn't clear, what gauge, you use 68-14s. That sounds about right.

Out of curiosity, what strings do you normally use? I started using D'Addarios ages ago because Bob Ferrazza at Oberlin used them and never being particularly picky myself, started using them because I liked his sound. Lately I've been rethinking everything about guitar playing from pick material/thickness to sting gauge. I'd love to hear your whats and whys if you felt like sharing.

I like d’addario fine, I just have come to prefer some other options. I have no reasons to say that they would be worth switching away from for any reason of than personal preference.

That being said, I usually use DR pure blues for round wound strings as well as thomastik’s roundwounds ($) though I primarily use thomastik flat wounds on my surf guitars. I started with whatever I could scrounge up years ago and then started trying flats. I started with d’addario chromes and eventually tried some other options and ended up sticking with thomastiks (the chromes are very stiff, the thomastiks are softer and smoother). Flats last a long time either way, so I don’t worry too much about spending more on them.

I tried DR’s flats recently and didn’t like how they felt - you could feel the roughness in the wraps which I feel like shouldn’t happen with flats. They also felt spongy to me.

I do use d’addario pretty regularly on my acoustic but am a bit less settled. I do like the clarity and consistency I’ve gotten with the baritone set, too. I might try their electric strings again in the future.

Thanks for the input!!!

Do the chromes/flats deaden the twang?

Has anyone tried the lighter gauge 62-13s?

A little late to the party but... I got a Dano Baritone (new one) and I'm digging it with the lighter strings (D'addario 62-13's). Smooth on the fingers and no feeling of be too light.

I used to use the Fender Baja Sexto baritone strings in A tuning. They discontinued them a # of years ago. I put together a custom set of D'Addarios from Strings By Mail. They are the same gauges as the Fender set, and it works out well.

16-26-36w-46w-56w-66w.
I also use A tuning and have a 30" scale.
