Legendary engineer /producer Al Schmitt has passed at age 91 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Schmitt
Al was the guy who recorded the Astronauts at RCA ..for that alone he deserves to be in the Surf music HOF . He had quite a career ,23 Grammy awards . Salute to a giant in the recording industry .

For that alone he deserves to be in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame! Wink

true ...the Astronauts RCA studio recordings are kinda special ,maybe the best fidelity recordings of the era , they've got that extra something .

I read a tribute article for him. Very impressive. He had what it took in his career as well as his life. Smile

Over the past year, I have binged on interview videos on Youtube with Al Schmitt. He seemed equally congenial and a straight-shooter and, obviously had an incredible ear and a facility to achieve great results. I recall his explanation that he avoids adjusting any EQ, rather, he relied on selecting the right mic and mic placement to do that job (better). What a loss, but what a life and what major contributions he leaves behind. Fascinating gentleman.

I mixed a concert with Monica Mancini and John Pizzarelli, Nancy Sinatra was in attendance as well. December 2016.

At the end of the show, a gentleman walks over to my sound console, extends his hand, says simply: "I'm Al Schmitt. Great job." and just walks away.

I was completely dumbfounded. All I could get out was 'thank you. pleased to meet you!'

seemed like a good, no b.s. guy. I'll never forget that moment for the rest of my career, and life.
