Would anybody know if Hondells where paid by Honda for creating the song ?
thank you ,Chris

Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote the song, and the Beach Boys recorded it first. The Hondells (Gary Usher and crew) covered it, and it was later used by Honda. I think Honda probably paid Gary Usher for the rights to use their version in advertising.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Huge Beach Boys fan and historian here. They were all given Honda bikes during their brief tour in Hawaii in 64 (after the song had came out). I believe Dennis ended up wrecking 2 or 3 of them. Gary Usher lead the Hondells and was a friend and early collaborator with Brian.

The Hondells didn't exist before the song was recorded. So, the question would more accurately be if Honda paid Gary Usher to record the song or paid Brian Wilson to write it. I seriously doubt Honda was involved up front, but did reap the rewards of selling more bikes once the song became a hit.

There were many recordings that used a specific car or model name in the title, such as "Ford G.T.," "Big Black Cadillac," "Chevy Shut Down," "My Mighty GTO," "Mean Little Monza," "Jag XKE," and the list goes on and on. None of these, as far as I know, were subsidized by the automobile companies.

I think GeeTo Tiger actually was commissioned by Pontiac.

The Beach Boys use the phrase....miniature golf and Hondas in the heat in their hit "All Summer Long" Probably should include "Little GTO" as we list songs with brand names.

Happy Sunsets!

And they're all in here:

I believe that this later track was used for ads along with being a stand alone track.
