An old pal said Adrien passed away unexpectedly last weekend.
She said she saw it on facebook.

Adrien Anthony was the drummer for Chum & organizer/host for the
South Bay Surf Stomp, which was held at Suzy's Bar and Grill on the Memorial Day weekend.
Suzy's is no longer there.

So sad. RIP, Adrien.

Bob

RIP Adrien. I didn't know him but saw him play a few times. Condolences to his family and friends.

I found this page which has more info about Adrien & a video
interview with Chum

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Adrien Anthony. He was the instigator and drummer for Chum, EFFU, Moby Dicks, as well as prior drummer for the Insect Surfers and other bands.

Over the years, he sat in with bands for a single song, or for entire sets. He has played with the Boardwalkers, EXP, Glasgow Tiki Shakers, Slacktone, and likely more than few that I never knew about or forgot to include in my notes of my recordings.

The first time I saw Adrien with his band Chum, they were opening for the Insect Surfers in a small bar in Huntington Beach on November 16, 2001. The Surfers drummer never made it to the show. Adrien sat in and the Insects played their full set.

Between Chum and Insect Surfers, I recorded Adrien more than a few hundred times. He never once complained about his playing or asked me to destroy a recording.

Adrien was a fixture and supporter of the surf music scene. He created and promoted his annual South Bay Surf Stomp which he started back in May 2003 and ran until the cancellaton of all music and entertainment events happened in 2020. He featured both well known as well as unknown bands. All of them made his show worth attending.

From the beginning, Adrien was open to being recorded. Since bands play for the audience, rather than the audio recordists, I paid back his acceptance by selling his merchandise at most of his shows that I attended.

We usually talked both before and after shows, even the ones where his time was at a premium, like at the South Bay Surf Stomp.

I miss him.

My deepest condolences go out to all who knew and loved Adrien.
Rest In Peace

Wow, so sad to hear this. I remember playing a show with him in Hollywood back in 2005 I think. He was super nice and gave me a bunch of CHUM and Insect Surfers CD's. That was when I learned about just how long they had been around creating awesome music and what they had done for the surf scene. (I remember them putting on a fantastic show that night as well!)

I'm very sorry to hear this. Adrien was a great guy and in my experience very encouraging and generous. Adrien sent me all the CHUM CDs when I was doing my radio show for 16 years. He also invited my band, Surfer Rex, to play at the South Bay Surf Stomp in 2017. Then, to make it more worth our while since we were coming from Ohio, Adrien also got us a gig the night before at the Purple Orchid tiki bar. What great memories! The night we showed up at Purple Orchid, we told Adrien that we hadn't brought our guitars or bass. We mistakenly - and ignorantly - thought they would be supplied along with the drums and amps. Even though he had a lot going on that night, Adrien drove back to his house to get us some guitars. In 2006, Adrien let me know that he was at a tattoo convention in Detroit and asked me if I wanted to go see the Clash exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Did I ever! We had a great night and even went to a car show afterwards. One other memory is when my wife and I went to a tiki festival in San Diego. CHUM was playing, along with Davie Allan who was playing with Pete Curry on drums and Mike Vernon on bass. Adrien went out of his way to introduce me to a bunch of cool people and to make sure I was having a good time. Well, all that shows what a cool person he was. He was also an amazing drummer! Thanks Adrien!

Wow...sorry to reply to an old thread. I worked with Adrien for a few years back in early 2000s (2004-2008ish). We used to hang out every day for lunch, hit the happy hours together, and occasionally jammed. He had an awesome rehearsal studio setup in downtown LA, and would never turn down an opportunity to jam. He was always way too complimentary of my guitar playing. One of the kindest guys I knew. We fell out of touch over the years, but I often think of him and appreciate the times we had.
