Permalink New Surf Band on the Scene- WIPED OUT

New Topic

Hi All,

I launched my surf band, WIPED OUT, from my apartment in NYC in June 2020, during the worldwide pandemic. Needless to say, we haven't gotten the chance to play shows yet, but we have put out 3 releases (6 songs total) in that time.

Of the 6 songs released to date, 5 are instro surf and 1 is a Beach Boys inspired vocal surf ballad.

You can hear all of our songs using the following Spotify Artist Link or in the YouTube Videos posted below (we have a full video for our vocal track):
https://open.spotify.com/artist/4nBtxEYkPQwYtQAYWlTJLU?si=b6YMuFBBQcCf6w8FlnK25w

We have also self-released our first 45 (Waves of Panic) on vinyl, including 2 of our instrumentals on a super rad clear vinyl with great artwork by Julian Weber (has also done Messer Chups art). The vinyl can be found here:

The surf music community around the world is one of the coolest things I've ever discovered in my lifetime as a musician. I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of this community, since I just found this forum today!

Let me know your thoughts on the tunes!

The Royal Aces in Denver give two solid thumbs up.

@fenderfan awesome, thanks for checking it out my dude! I'm going to check out the Royal Aces literally right now!

Welcome aboard wipedoutnyc!

Great mix of surf tunes and epic artwork.
"Sweet Almond Eyes" was awesome, don't see many surf bands playing these style vocal songs.

What style of music had you been recording previously? Some songs sounded like they had influence of reggae and early 90s rock (especially bass parts). Cheers!

@TheHappyHodad Thanks a lot for checking it out! Yeah I was extremely nervous about doing "Sweet Almond Eyes" because I never really considered myself a lead singer, and here I am recording 4 part harmonies trying to emulate the Beach Boys, so it was a challenge!

In an earlier musical life, the drummer and I of this band were in pop-punk/post-hardcore/emo bands, so I'm not surprised if you hear some 90s rock influence! My initial idea with this band was to take traditional surf guitar and combine it punk drums/bass in an effort to make it hit harder and feel a little modern. Hopefully that's what comes through!

Where in NYC are you guys located? We're located in Brooklyn ourselves.

I'm in Manhattan! I've heard of you guys through Spotify, didn't realize you were a NYC band. That's awesome...we should play a show together once the pandemic finally ends, it would be a great fit. What are some venues around here you guys play? At one point I had a show booked at Otto's Shrunken Head right before the pandemic.

We're always looking for other bands to play with, so yeah when things get going again... there's normally a huge turnover of venues in new york, and with the current situation who knows what will still be left when it's over. We've played at Otto's a lot over the years, it's a good place. We've played loads of venues around town like Mercury Lounge, Gold Sounds, Brooklyn Bowl, the Gutter, etc. Pretty much anywhere that will have us and not make us turn down!

Awesome, looking forward to playing some loud, reverb-drench shows with you guys!

Sounds like a RaWkIn’ good time going on in NYC! And great to see the surf fam continuing to grow - welcome to the party!

I’m really digging Sweet Almond Eyes - great job! One More Before Dark made me grin, for a minute I thought I was in for an Enter Sandman surfy jam. Cool twist and turn on what I can only assume was the inspiration there. Last but not least, I’m also really digging the artwork!!

Awesome, thanks so much for checking out the tunes! Enter Sandman was definitely the inspiration for "One More Before Dark" and I very much wanted people to make the association! One of my goals with the band is to take Surf in a direction that feels modern and energetic, but also can still have a bit of fun! The artwork was super important to me as well, so I'm glad you like it!
