I know that Jerry McGee use a Marshall when the Ventures played in Japan. It sounded quite good, clean.

A vintage Marshall can absolutely pull it off. Here's mine, a 1969 50 watter, next to my 63 Bassman.
These two amps are really in the same ballpark. The Marshall is like a more aggressive, brighter version of the Bassman, and it likes to blow up if you look at it wrong. It likes to let you down at the worst moments. The Bassman is indestructible on the other hand.

A good tech can help you with that. My old Marshall amps run tip top and have for decades. But yeah, the old Fender stuff is indeed bulletproof. More robust output transformers I understand.

Vic, what is that Marshall cab, a 4x10?

It's a 2x12. Greenbacks. For some reason, it sounds way better than the 4x12 I used to have

Here's another Marshall powered rig I like to surf on. Little Kahuna, '76 JMP 50, JBL D140F loaded tone ring cab. It sounds HUGE!

I betcha it does! Smile I'd love to try one myself.

I plan to use this JCM800 clone for gigs where my Bandaster rig would take up too much space. The low gain channel sounds really really good.

That'll get on it! 50 watter?

Yes it is

I do, at home, with a small Marshall Reverb 12.

Never surrender in finding a surfcaster

Trivial tech note: in the USA the power is 60cycles which makes for a little tighter sound than when these amps are used in Europe where it’s 50cycles. This something I noticed when going over there with my own amp and noticing the difference. Also, Echoplex’s run slower in Europe!

Jerry McGee, of the Ventures, said that he use a Marshall in Japan, because the power there made it sound good for his needs. From what I could tell, some of Japan is 50 Hz while the rest is 60 Hz, but at 100 volts.

Just guesstimating, but my impression would be a kind of saggy power supply, but also lower gain. Videos of the Ventures show the Marshall, and the sound is perfectly in line with the Ventures sound that I’ve known and loved. The sight of a Marshall in that band was surprising.

I would think that a closed back, 4x12” cabinet would be great for Surf. I have a Marshall style 2x12” cabinet, similar to what they used on a 2061. That definitely has a tight bass response.

I've been looking for one of those at a decent price. I have a few Lead 12's and love them for what they are. Great sounding little SS amps!

i usd two TAD Marshall style amps for the latest Razorblades album - along with a blackface bassman and deluxe. i like the punch in the low mids and the sparkling highs. i also use the jtm 45 clone for bass...

I play on a Marshall as well. the right sound is all about tweaking those knobs.

Late to the party but I've only ever owned marshalls and I do record surf with mine !

I use a JCM 900 hi gain dual reverb. The built-in reverb isn't suitable for surf but the amp has a beautiful, very rich clean tone, I plug in an Oceans 11 (probably will switch to a Topanga at some point, but I love the Oceans tone) and I tend to boost with a tubescreamer to get that crunchy Dick Dale type sound on behind the reverb. It's not as twangy as a fender but I like the bigger punch. Perfect with my jaguar.

Fear The Bat People !

I tried surfing with a JTM 45, but it kept sinking under the waves. Then, when I retrieved it and plugged it in, it didn't work anymore. Smile

Just want to say I really enjoyed the Razorblades album you were referring to, especially the guitar tones

This was recorded live using a Marshall amp. I do not remember the exact model, but it was about 100w tube I think. I didn't have my own live gear at that time so Ι plugged in whatever was there available. Fun times! In that song I used a slightly drived Boss OD3 into a 6g15 clone if I recall correctly.
