Some sad news this morning, Ennio Morricone passed away in Rome.

A true great of music that has left us a wonderful musical legacy.

The Dead Planet Surfers

He lived a good life, contributed some amazing music and was part of some really good movies. I love Fistful of Dollars, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Morricone’s Spaghetti western music was part of me getting into surf music.
I appreciate that many people love his later works.

Another giant who's works will live on. RIP.

Cool

A true genius and visionary. A composer who was equally brilliant at creating sparse, moody scores as well as complex highly dynamic and explosive pieces. He refused to be limited by musical convention and developed an uncanny ability to instantly evoke whatever emotion was required for the scene. Such a huge loss to the musical world.
RIP

I think I need to go play TGTBATU.

I think it's telling that so many surf records throw in at least one Western song.

Without his influence I might have never had themes like this roll around in my head.
I will never come remotely close to his genius but I am thankful for the beautiful creations he leaves as a legacy and inspiration.

That music was so perfect for expressing the ambiance of open and desolate land. I wonder how it would have been received, if actual people in the Olde West ever heard it. Somehow, I think that they would have liked it.

It's interesting that the composer was from elsewhere and didn't live in or near the American West. He definitely understood the vibe. Likewise, it's interesting how the imagery of the Old West still plays well in popular culture. The Western, in Country and Western, still exists. I think that was one of the things that I liked about The Eagles. This exists in many cultures; in Japan it's Samurai movies, for example, but the appeal is always the same, one person, or a small group of people, overcoming the odds and standing up for right. Somehow, Morricone came up with the perfect soundtrack.

Sorry I don’t know

Jeff(bigtikidude)

How did you get a cd of that?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I believe Jeff Big Tiki Dude's Spaghetti Western show is on Radio Free Bakersfield #105 from 11/02/2008. This should be found on radiofreebakersfield.com archive site.

Hi SurfNutDuke, Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this site! I've now downloaded my very own copy of Jeff's show for posterity. This is like Christmas in July. Great job, Jeff!
