So what do you guys do when playing bass at home? Strictly jam along with songs? Anybody try to compose songs on bass?

Wow. I've never met another bass player with a mangled index finger. Since the accident 20 years ago, I mostly use a pick because my finger strike is crooked.

Hello fellow mangled index brother. Haha. Never thought about how a right hand injury could hamper things. Didn’t Jerry Garcia have a missing right hand finger or something?

I jam on bass all the time without music playing with it. I can make it sing.

I've been learning some Ventures bass lines via a guy who covers several on youtube. It has me listening and thinking of Bob Bogle more and I continue to be impressed. I don't know if it's because he came to it after Nokie took over on guitar, but his pick style is so tight and driving. I think he is a real model on how to play bass in a surf/instrumental band.

For the 2020 compilation, I wrote a song with bass in the lead, drums and rhythm guitar, at https://surfguitar101.com/downloads/details/877/

I recently finished recording Jack Nitzsche's 'The Lonely Surfer' with the bass taking the lead throughout. It was fun layering in more instruments as the song went along.

I like playing bass, but mostly play it only when making a backing track or making a bassline for one of the few songs I've written. For my own songs, I like going with a more melodic line.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.
Bringing instruments back to life since 2013.

I've been known to compose on bass. I do find working with a six string bass is a little more productive, but a four banger is often what's handy.
