Permalink NGD 62 reissue Strat in FLAMINGO PINK

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

It almost looks butterscotch and it’s from Australia. Bought it locally as I have never seen this color here in the US on a Strat. It’s a 94 MIJ model. I made a photo of it next to my Shell Pink Strat for a comparison.

Does anyone have any information on this? I've tried looking up Coral Pink guitars by Fender and a lot of them look Fiesta Red (faded) or Shell Pink that has yellowed. I know Fender Japan did a Shell Pink but this is a made for the Australian market (or maybe domestic Japan and brought to Australia). EDIT: I found a "Flamingo Pink" color by Fender Japan. I think it's more like this color but I would like to know if anyone has any info on it.

Thanks, Ivan. I do think it's pretty for sure. I did hear from some people who pointed me to some other people who know Fender Japan quite well. I also found this site for Chicago Music Exchange specifically for the Japanese non-US markets. Flamingo Pink is one of their rarest colors, along with Candy Blue and California Blue.
So, Fender Japan did very few guitars in this color. They have some pretty damned cool custom colors that are not really vintage correct, but they are very cool.
When I saw this guitar on our local Craigslist, I thought it was Shell Pink, but it was listed as Coral Pink. Coral Pink is much deeper and almost a Fiesta Red. I am SURE that the Shad's matching Strats were Coral Pink back in the day, which is why I initially was interested in this guitar. When I saw it in person, I knew it wasn't Shell Pink and it didn't appear to me to be Coral, either. But it immediately struck me as being really cool and a color I had never, ever seen before. When he told me he got it in Australia, then I knew it had to be one of those special Japanese custom colors that they make only for the Asian/Pacific market.

Ooops, edit for the link to CME: https://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/pages/fender-made-in-japan-guitars?category_uuid=dfd39027-d134-4353-b9e4-57dc6be791b9&page=3

Hmmm I am on a lot of Shadows websites and part of many groups. I don't think any of them would agree with that claim.

This is a pretty good oversight of the entire controversy:
https://planetbotch.blogspot.com/2014/08/fender-colour-mysteries-fiesta-red-and.html
"This second Strat definitely was Fiesta Red."

The below sure looks like a fiesta red to me:

I'm well aware of the controversy this causes with certain fans. I just remember reading somewhere a while back Bruce calling it Salmon Pink. I think Cliff's first Strat that Hank used was definitely Fiesta Red. But with all of the mixing that Fender did with its paints, I'm sure there were several oddball mixings about. I had an original Fiesta Red Jaguar that I thought was more orange than anything.

There's no color controversy about the matching Fenders the Shadows got in '61 - everybody, including Hank and Bruce themselves, agree those were fiesta red. The controversy was over the color of the first, maple necked '59 Strat. From the above article:

"But on numerous occasions going right back through the decades, Hank has rejected suggestions that his mid ‘59 Strat was originally red. He’s always maintained that it was pink, and used the term “Flamingo Pink” in a range of interviews. Interestingly, Bruce Welch has also said that when the band first saw the guitar depicted in the catalogue, it appeared "Flamingo Pink". He's also categorically concurred with Hank, saying: "... It was definitely that colour [Flamingo Pink] in the brochure that we had and when the guitar arrived it was pink, not the more orangey colour of the fiesta red guitars that we got later." (source: Guitarist interview - July 1996)"

Of those colors on the CME website, your looks closer to what they are calling "Shell Pink" (for ex. see the Telecaster) The Flamingo pink seems a bit lighter, but we all know pictures can be deceiving. Personally I can't see pink in either what they call Shell Pink OR Flamingo. They may have mixed the color to approximate the aging of the clear top coat which tends to make pink turn to a flesh color.

It seems like there really should be a standard to avoid confusion. IMO, your guitar looks like the lighter, pinker version of Desert Tan which Fender used primarily for the budget line in the late 50s/60s such as Music Masters and Broncos.

BTW, nice color. I like it!

dang! You are a Shadows Encyclopedia, Ivan! Thanks for setting me straight on my Mixing things up. Definitely the reason I ask questions here. Thanks again! This has my interests in Strats up again.

They do look similar on that website, Websufer. Here’s a picture next to my Shell Pink Strat for comparison:

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up You're very welcome! Happy to be of help.

The whole thing is very confusing, though - Hank and Bruce say that the original Strat was Flamingo Pink - but you look at the above Flamingo Pink and it's not even close to Fiesta Red, so that's obviously not the color of that original Strat. And Fender claims that back in the day they had no such color named Flamingo Pink. So, what was that original color?? Who knows??

This has my interests in Strats up again.

Well, you know I think that's ALWAYS a wonderful thing! Big Grin

Anyone interested in Fender's "Coral Pink" should save themselves the inevitable headaches trying to determine the actual factory shade/formula and instead go with Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Coral Isle Mist or whatever "coral" they are calling it now...it's the only paint that comes close to Fender's original (Reranch I found to be clay pot color). See some of my earliest threads here where I post photos of my refinished Coral Isle Mist Strat.

Thanks Blackheartsfan. It may help if you post the URL to the thread here.

Do you still have pics of the refin? Would love to see it!

I will post a link I just have to find it... it's one of my earliest threads here....I started an entire thread....sadly it's not as comprehensive as the nearly 6-8 page one that I had posted at The Squier '51 Modders Site (which has been gone now nearly a decade).

Here's the promised link to the thread on my Korean-era Squier Stratocaster refinished in Krylon's Indoor/Outdoor Multi-Purpose "Coral Isle Mist" (now known as Coral/Coral Isle) spray paint.

https://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/12743/

note:

the guitar's original/factory finish was not stripped before I repainted it....I scuff sanded the body removing imperfections and the always present neck finish cracks typical with Strats then used White primer....probably two cans then the body got four or five cans of color, in this case the Coral Isle Mist then it was wet-sanded after that the body got a few cans of Krylon Clear Gloss which when cured was also wet-sanded starting with 600-800 grit working up to 2000 grit before I compunded it using auto rubbing compound then waxed it with California Gold auto polish.

The most accurate representation of the Krylon Coral Isle Mist/Coral on my Squier Strat project is the photo showing the back of the guitar with the rear cover removed and the trem claw springs visible.

Everyone who has seen this guitar is amazed with the vibrancy of the color and the shade in general...quite a few thought it came from the factory.....that I'll tell you made me feel good.... it was my first project of this type and I put a considerable amount of effort into it....my second Squier Strat refinish was painted Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze and now resides half a world away....in Israel, a member of the defunct Squier '51 Modders Site fell in love with it after seeing it's project thread.

I bought a Shell pink Jazzmaster at the USA 1 flea market back in the day for $35.00.
Wish I'd kept it.
