Permalink What do you call this echo effect?

New Topic

In The Space Cossacks's song "Space Probe" (https://youtu.be/-Yj_01j1620) there is a really heavy echo that gives the effect of being deep in outer space. I remember hearing it in some rock music from the 1970s, but this is my first time hearing it in surf. Does anyone know if that effect has a specific name and, more importantly, does anyone know of any other surf tunes that employ it?

Hi Roy:

I played lead guitar on that track. I used a '70s Echoplex tape echo unit (borrowed for the recording session) on that track, as well as a reverb unit, set pretty high. I think the only thing a bit different with the echo on this track is that I turned up the echo level a bit higher than it was on the other tracks I recorded with that Echoplex (all of our debut album Interstellar Stomp). I don't think there's anything particularly special about it and there's no name for it as far as I know. I just made sure that the timing of the echo repeats was in tempo with the song, and then cranked the level.

Not really sure whether other surf songs employ that kind of echo. Maybe something by the Nebulas, Los Twang! Marvels, the TomorrowMen or even possibly Frankie & the Pool Boys or Pollo Del Mar.

Hope that helps! Thanks!

Okay, a) you're rad, I love your stuff, and keep up the good work, and b) this totally helps - I'm glad for a musical quest. Thank you.

Roy- you have an excellent ear for the real deal Echoplex.
Ivan is correct, The TomorrowMen, The Pool Boys and Pollo Del Mar all use the Echoplex in the studio. Danny's has a beautiful EQ taper on the repeats that's really distinct. Mine is fatter and heavily saturated. I love the way you can manually wangle the time slider.
they are a pain in the ass to drag around to gigs, but they are fantastic for recording.

I want to give thanks to Ivan one more time. Your leads exposed me to some killer stuff. I even managed to knock together a YouTube playlist of great space surf based on those recommendations: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXoTq1L8zRaLiIeTfvLi_ACUxdlCIi68T

Excellent! Very happy to hear that, Roy! Enjoy! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
