Permalink North Sea Surf Radio to cease operations

On January 1st 2013 we caused a blast wave in the surf music scene by launching the very first online radiostation dedicated to instrumental surf music from a small attic in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. For the first time in history the surf music scene was able to enjoy a non commercial radio station playing surf music 24/7, available on all thinkable platforms and machines wired to the internet through cable, 3G, dialup or any other possible connection.

Since the start North Sea Surf Radio has written history on several occasions. We were the very first station to broadcast live from the biggest surf music event, the Surfer Joe Summer Festival. We did so for four consecutive years broadcasting over 100 live shows and interviews with some of the best and most legendary artists in surf music.
We made 21 countdown lists compiling the best surf music records as voted by our listeners. We had dozens of DJ’s from all over the globe making weekly shows and last but not least we played the latest surf music and the best classics in modern and classic surf music.

As of December 31st North Sea Surf Radio will (for now) cease operations. Time and technical issues we have been struggling with the past years make it hard for us to give the station the maximum amount of attention and maintenance it deserves. Therefore we will put the station to rest, for now, because the moment we will once again have the time at hand to give the station maximum attention we hope to return with an updated and even stronger NSSR. This could be 1 5, or 10 years from now but eventually we feel the station is too good to lay to rest untill eternity.

Coming weekend our DJ’s will bring you their final show after which we will unfold our plans for the final days of NSSR. We will go out with a bang so after tuning in to the weekend shows check out our Facebook next week for more information. Thanks for your continued support from our entire team at North Sea Surf Radio.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

I'm very sorry to hear this. Many thanks to Niels and the DJ's for their phenomenal work. I greatly appreciate that this has been a true labor of love. I'll look forward to the eventual return of NSSR, in some form.

Bob

I’m very sad to hear this, even though I had stopped doing my show.
Hope to see some return in the future.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Wow! Thus endeth an era. May a new one begin and soon! A hearty thank you to all involved, now, in the past, and in the future.

As a newcomer to the surf scene I was just getting started with NSSR for about the last month. Thanks for the great work.

Thank you, all that have had a hand in this, and especially to all the DJ's for your extra work and heart. It has been my go-to station for all these years, and I've been exposed to so much good music I would have never otherwise.
Hope an alternative will rise up, some day.
Good times!

NSSR is THE best! its its the one beacon of light in a dark world of mediocre internet radio.

This is sad news. Hopefully it will return

Thank you Niels & everyone who helped chase the dream! Sad to hear the news, but encouraged by the 'not forever' sentiment.

That's a shame. Thanks for the great music.

My criticisms of NSSR are widely known, however...

I’m willing to offer the entirety of nssr a home on our servers, without charge, in perpetuity.

There are three conditions. 1) No more toxicity and surf snobbery. 2) donation campaigns are directed to me to cover my running costs. 3) Reverb Mike is in charge of music policy.

So, if you care about preserving “traditional surf” that is your lifeline.
Merry Christmas.

Hi Mike,

I don’t have the time to be in charge of the music policy . Not sure who recommended me for the position, but they didn’t reach out to me first to see if I was on board with this suggestion. NSSR is Niels project. Have you approached him with your offer?

Surf is cool. (duh) NSSR is WAY cool. 1. We need to consider that it is more than a radio station that appeals (presently) to a small portion of the planet. It is also a repository for a folk music. Until the Smithsonian comes a knockin'... 2. Jimi dug surf music. 3. Any opportunity to combat snobbery in all of it's evil forms should be considered.
