Have my black face Pro Reverb with a Surf Bug opto installed.....much better than the stock bug. Thinking about pulling the trigger on a Nocturn Nail Head for amps without built in tremolo.

All but one of my amps have trem built in, some are bias-vary others are roach. For gigs I have a pedal board that can run out to two amps (with a Morley mixer). There is a Flint on that, which has good enough trem (including harmonic trem). But when I have two amps hooked up, I often like using trem on one but not on the other, so I use the amp’s built in trem. (Sorry for going slightly off topic) —He who dies with the most tubes... wins |

Today, I got a Surfy Trem, and it sounds fantastic in both the Brownface and Blackface settings. I also have a Keeley modified Boss TR2, and a Catalinbread Pareidolia harmonic mezmerizer that I like a lot. I haven't had a chance to A/B these pedals against the Surfy Trem. I generally prefer pedals to the onboard tremolo in my blackface Fenders. I don't own a Brownface, so my experience playing onboard harmonic tremolo is nil. that said, I love the sound of the onboard harmonic tremolo used by bands I've seen. —Bob Last edited: Dec 19, 2020 01:31:59 |

In comparing my onboard brownface trem to the surfy, if there's a difference, I haven't noticed it. Also, I had taken the surfy off my pedal chain once and noticed a distinct loss in my overall tone. Whatever this thing does in bypass mode, it's glorious. This goes for my high gain amps as well. ditched any tremolo pedals for amp. the bias vary on the princeton is very nice, and once my super is finished i'll have that wacky harmonic tremolo i've wanted for years. i like using other things for pedal tremolo that get a more square wave chop, or something where I can change the rhythmic structure. currently using a spaceman mission control for that. Are all tremolos equally valid? My amp has optical trem, which serves my purposes, but I've always wanted to try an amp with bias or harmonic tremolo |
