Permalink Surf N Ska: A Mash Up of CA Surf and Jamaican Ska

New Topic

Any other Jamaican Ska fans on here? How about a mash up Ska and Surf?

I'm working on a new single I'm planning on releasing soon once I finish the recording and mixing on the two songs, and get the proper licensing for the one track; it's an effort at a mash up of my two musical loves, 60s Jamaican Ska and California Surf Rock. First track is a Big Band Ska-Surf version of the Jerry Lordan tune Apache, a standard in the Surf genre; 2nd track is an original Ska-Surf tune called Storm Surge I wrote back around 2007-ish. Original Album art as well, including the photo in the album art.

Ska and Surf go well together, methinks. I'm not the first to mash up the two genres, but you don't hear too many tunes combining the two and their different elements and qualities. Enjoy!

BIG fan here of pretty much all things reggae, dub, ska from the 60’s thru the 70’s and even some of the early 80’s stuff.

I’m really digging your work here. Of course you’d expect the prominent off-beat accent rhythm to be part of an endeavor like this, however, the very pleasant surprise is how well you’ve done the horn section! Some real nice call and reponse to it and those early ska signature/‘correct’ chordal notes and phrases too.

I’m with you Potbelly, the genre mashups here sound pretty great to me. Great job!

Love it! Huge fan of 1st wave “reggae” but isn’t it really ska, dance hall, rock steady, reggae?!! Faves are Desmond Dekker, Horace Andy, Skatalites, Toots and the Maytals, Alton Ellis, and of course Prince Buster!

That surf tone is sweet! It almost gets buried a few times but it’s there!

Really interesting! Does Hank Marvin proud!

Nothing wrong with marying ska and surf! skurf!

Huge ska fan, especially the two tone era.

Forever known as the luckiest man alive.

Cool! Think it would work well. Love Ska and all the rest, saw Bob Marley on the Kaya tour in 1978, perhaps that started it all.

That's fun!

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Potbelly, just a heads up that The Surfrajettes are playing the central coast, Morro Bay Monday 8/5.
