A little YouTube digging ...

I am pretty sure Surf Beat and Panic (which are somewhat similar) are reversed here.

Surf Beat
Panic
Pipeline
Earthquake
Torture (courtesy of Drumuitar)
Hiawatha

Ralph Geddes, Paul Geddes, Marty Smith, Rick Gardner, Ron Smith

Used as a backing band by Assing "Aki" Aleong/Leonard Gonzalez.

I REALLY like The Nobles - I always thought they were under-rated as a first wave band - Their version of Pipeline is my second favorite, next to the Chantays, of course. That "E" before the first glissando is super cool. They have a nice drive to everything they play. It's laid back, but the drummer and bass are pushing the tempo. A sense of urgency.

Heck, I even like "Mary Ann" Laughing

This being the one that's "Aki Aleong &."

My favorites are Earthquake and Torture.

As I was collecting these links together I definitely had a feeling like I had accidentally stumbled into the Elephants Graveyard and looked up to see "CF was here" carved into a tree trunk. I hadn't realized that the Nobles were the source for Gun & Surf that the AquaSonics did that once at the Skylark. And Hiawatha, too, I'll bet now. I was thinking that was the Surfaris. I definitely see what Phil Dirt meant about them being a big influence on the Surfaris.

What direction was the Surfaris' thing with the Catalinas? PJ Medina managed to point that out to me last night ...

It's funny how much such a small thing like that sticks out - and how many bands skip it in their covers.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I should point out that (a) the videos link to

http://thenoblesband.wetpaint.com/

a site for the Nobles last maintained in 2009, sadly. They ask if anyone remembers them and give some contact information.

CONTACT US --- DO YOU REMEMBER US ? - LET US KNOW.
THENOBLESBAND@YAHOO.COM
OR
NASAMAN2004@YAHOO.COM

And (b) the commentary in the video itself is from Phil Dirt's site.

You know, one of my oldest friends was Aki's housemate in LA for years. By all accounts he was a tad eccentric. (Aki wound up being a very successful character actor, by the way. He was typecast and gets all the "oh, look, that guy" bit parts on TV and movies) I bet I could find out lots more about him and his involvement with the Nobles, if anyone wanted info. I thought he had nothing to do with this record, though, except the cover.

Aki sang "Mary Ann" - a very cheesy piece of surf exploitation that would be more suited to a Disney film than a real surf album. Really bouncy, and bubbly. I love it.
Lyrics include:
'walk the board now'
'you're a boss!'
'hang of ten, now!' Yes, 'Hang, of Ten'....

"Mary Ann" Doesn't sound at all like the rest of the album. The rest of it is pretty hard hitting, a definitely driving. It's what I think live surf in '63 sounded like.

i keep hearing 'earthquake' by the esquires on pandora radio not realizing it's a cover of the tune by the nobles. it's one of those tunes that suddenly jumped out at me and it's on 'the birth of surf' which i have but i guess i wasn't paying attention Shock . what a cool tune and my other newly discovered favorite by them is 'torture'.

and tuck, i did listen to all of these when you posted this and thought it was all cool but for some reason it did't register with my old brain cells until i heard the esquires cover.

Outerwave covers Earthquake

Yes! They have exceedingly cool taste in material. But reflecting, I think they do the one Earthquake (in Surf City) by the Illusions that Jon & the Nightriders also do, as opposed to the one by the Nobles that the Esquires and Bomboras do.

Sorry I confused that above, too. Corrected now.
