Permalink LOST HEROES FROM THE DAWN OF SURF!

A friend of mine asked me about this:
Johnny And The Hurricanes LP Red River Rock released
as Surfin` with Johnny And The Hurricanes in Brasil in the early 60s.
Has anyone of our Braslian members a copy of this vintage album?
Please mail me at nehls-r@mail.de or post the cover here.
Thank you very much for your help!
Ruediger

It's just the "Red River Rock" LP as originally issued on Warwick. Classic late 50's rock instrumental album, but no surf here.

Well, I see this thread is going to keep me busy. Hooray!

Listen please, thanks? :)

damn! i didn't see this thread until after my separate post. here's one though!
...
I found this track by The Aeronauts on a record that my friend put out, and thought that I'd link it here. It's got a super drippy Astronauts vibe!

This would be really cool if it was real. Smile
Still kinda cool though.

OH C'MON, PAUL!!! PLAY THE GAME Smile Big Grin

I tried. The songs are very cool! The recordings are a bit too modern though which gave it away immediately for me.
But, being a Washingtonian, I was very intrigued by the concept!

There actually were some hidden surf/instro lost heroes from the DC area, the Reekers and the Nautiloids that I referred to in an earlier part of this thread.

There is a chance my interwebz search skills are failing me, but I didn’t find reference to this one. I discovered it in ‘The Beach Boys - America’s Band’ by Johnny Morgan where he is telling the background of their recording of Surfin’ at World Pacific Studio in October 1961 (10/3/1961) for release on the Candix label.

He goes on to write how there was nothing else like it on the label, although in 1962, they put out this surf instrumental tune by Scott Walker. Originally Moongooner Stomp, it was released as Moongooner Twist by the Moongooners.

The form is wildly familiar but the energy is pretty fantastic particularly for what seems to be a fleeting surf instrumental effort by Scott/the Moongoners.

Enjoy!

Donna Records was a Bob Keane label named after the Ritchie Valens hit.
Del-Fi was another Bob Keane record company.

Right. It seems both the Beach Boys initial recording and this Moongooners track eventually made it out on a few different labels including that pressing of the 7" used for whomever's YT video I referenced, but the early connection, and my breadcrumb trail to discover the band and tune was the initial release connection through Candix. Looks like wikipedia has some neat info on the short-lived label btw.

This record below may be pre-surf (1960?) - Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys fame along with a few other 1960's luminaries were in this band. John Blair mentions the Gamblers in his book on page 53. (Surf Music 1961-1965).

I sometimes use MOONGOONER as my handle online because of this record

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

Tried to read the whole thread but I stumbled forward. I would like to add a tune that fits the mojo!
