Permalink P90 surf pickup upgrade help

New Topic

Hello

Ive got a Wilson Bros Ventures Anniversary Model. Its an amazing guitar but the pickups in it suck. Noisy, no sparkel etc.
Im looking for some nice noiseless pups to install
Ive been looking at
Tv Jones
Kinman
Frailin

Wonder if anyone has any suggestions or experience in P90 for surf
Kinda want that Jazzmaster sound

Maybe try a TV Jones Magnatron. It is hum cancelling, has magnetic poles and a similar DC resistance as a Jazzmaster pickup. Doesn't sound exactly like a Jazzmaster but is closer than the typical P-90 type. It is also available in a P-90 mount.

I have Fralin P-90s in a Les Paul. They sound amazing for rock or blues. You can surf with them, although they're not typically my first choice. They certainly don't sound like Jazzmaster pickups. But if you're in the mood for something different, they won't disappoint! I recommend using the middle position because it's hum-cancelling and sounds surfier.

Heck yea
I went ahead and got some Fralin Hum Cancelling P90 Alnico’s.
Even says sounds like a jazzmaster

If you are looking for a more surfy, cleaner sound from P-90's then make sure, as some have posted above, to get P-90's with Alnico polepieces instead of alnico magnets with screw polepieces.
Fralin, Lollar and others make these.
They have less mids and are closer sounding to a Jazzmaster.
A much more twangy pickup

Cheers,
Jeff
